The Cleland Cross Country Cycle was designed by Geoff Apps. They were manufactured from 1982 to1984 though the germ of the idea goes back to the mid 1960s when Apps started to modify bicycles for off-road use.
Strictly speaking they are not Mountain Bikes because Apps knew nothing of the US Mountain Bikes the first of which was made by Joe Breeze about 18 months before Apps made his first custom framed Cleland in 1979.
Cleland style bicycles were also made by English Cycles who made the frames for the Aventura model. Highpath Engineering made a wide variety of Cleland influenced bicycle designs from 1985 to about 1992. They also renovated and upgraded Clelands from 1984 onwards so some of the original Clelands show the Highpath name. Today Cleland style bicycles are still being ridden, designed and built. Also shown is a 2010 Cleland NRS and a Mountain Bike that has been modified to have the signatory upright riding position of a Cleland.
