59. Dovnsklint - A moraine clay cliff...

53. A full moon

Dovnsklint is the name of the moraine clay cliff at Langeland's southern tip. Langeland is one of many smaller islands just south of my home island of Fyn, Denmark.

This was shot on April 13th, 2009. I had borrowed a car from work, so I decided to take advantage of that. The 87km (54 miles) would take me quite a bit of time on my bicycle :)

I spent about 3 and a half hours down there but setting up / moving my gear is a slow process, so I didn't get to film any of the other local sites that I had in mind. Unfortunately, my gear - though heavy - is still a bit wobbely. The heavy slider makes my tiny tripod soft in the knees.

Wow Rico, I had no idea (never thought about it) that the horizontal slide effect in movies is done with equipment like the indiSliderpro. Good to know, maybe for the future.
Especially in the wood, the effect is awesome. Beautiful moving pictures, fantastic quality and of course, as always, the music is perfect.
    Beautiful work man.

Pisse flotte billeder. Virkelig.

Spectacular, my friend. What kind of filter are you using? I loved it all, but particularly the contrast in the forest.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 8 months ago
    Thanks...

I use the Cokin P filter system - a cheap alternative to Tiffen and other systems.

    cokin.com/ico3-p1-2.html
I used a 121M and 121F filter (at the same time) on most of these clips. The filters are fairly cheap and I own quite a few of them.

The holder / system looks like this:

Very enjoyable -- I feel like I've had a mini-getaway to Denmark. I particularly like the closing scene. Some footage looked like tilt/shift or LensBaby -- is that done in post, or is that inherent in lens / aperture ? Also music is very effective.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 8 months ago
    Thanks...

No tilt/shift or Lensbaby used here (actually just sold my Lensbaby 2.0 today - didn't really use it much). The Letus adapter and lenses / ND filters is doing most of it. Contrast and some warm colors added in post with Magic Bullet Looks.

This location was the first of 200+ that will someday become a full length feature film (I think) with some of my most favorite locations in Denmark: pixelviking.com/blog/2009/2/20/denmark-the-movie.html

I was wondering about your IndiSlider Pro, I have one too but I have not used it yet because, even though I have oiled the rails and even sprayed them with an additional lubricant, I still hear a "friction" noise as it slides down the rail. I was wondering if yours does the same thing? Some people say that they've been able to get it so that it doesn't make any noise at all while going down the rails but mine does. I've even taken it apart and didn't find anything rubbing.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 7 months ago
Mine slides fine - without any noise. Did you balance your camcorder, so that it's neither front or back heavy? Both rails should share the load. If one side is being pushed down and the other pulled up, I guess sliding would be hard and even make 'noise'.
  •
  • Steve Crow 7 months ago
No noise at all? I haven't even put the camera on the sled yet, it makes this noise just sliding down the rails by itself.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 7 months ago
My slider only makes the sound that is to be expected but I wouldn't call it 'noise'. I suggest calling indisystem, if you think it's more noisy than expected.
  •
  • Steve Crow 7 months ago
Yes that's what I did, even posted a video showing the noise I was getting. They think it may be one of the blocks is defective so they are sending me a whole new set - with a free upgrade - so I am quite satisfied that the problem will be resolved in the next few days.

Very nice, but CMOS jello effect shows up its ugly head again. I've read in another thread that you are thinking of the Sony Z5. This means CMOS again, and it is tape based. I think you should really consider the Panasonic HMC150, it has the proper 3CCD sensor and the same AVCHD workflow that you have got used to.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 4 months ago
Rolling shutter can be an issue in certain situations, but I'm not sure that's what we see here. The tripod setup that I used here, was quite wobbely and I guess, that could be seen as rolling shutter.

Rolling shutter aka 'the jello effect' is really only a problem if you throw your CMOS camcorder around or film at an event with flash photography / strobe lighting.

The Z5 can be used tapelessly with an accessory and that's what I had in mind. However, adding the accessory puts the Z5 at USD 5.000, so I've decided to just go nuts and get the PMW-EX1 (USD 6.100). It's still CMOS technology but I prefer the advantages of CMOS over CCD and am prepared to live with the disadvantages...

The EX1 should be enough of a challenge for me to get to grips with and after all learning is half the fun :P

I might be 'out of commission' for a few months, as I start selling my current video / photo equipment...
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 4 months ago
Download and play this 30min (900mb) clip of the EX1 doing its thing in low light:

    exposureroom.com/members/cseeman.aspx/assets/71afa237749b46379c532e857afcaf16/

If that doesn't blow your mind, I don't know what will :D
  • AVCHD User 4 months ago
Now you are the man! Buying an HDV camcorder, the Z5, just to shell out another $1K for a tapeless recorder is beyond me, but the EX1 makes total sense. I am sure you know that you can use SDHD cards in the EX with an adapter.

P.S. I am seeing the HG10 for $400 (refurbished, but a rather trusted merchant) and thinking about buying one ;-) Really, this is the only tapeless HD camcorder with 24p and the largest sensor and the best sensitivity. The HF-S has a tad larger sensor, but much worse sensitivity.

P.P.S. Have you thought about the upcoming Panasonic HMC40? Only $2k, but a quite small sensor.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 4 months ago
I did know about the choice of using an adapter and cheaper storage cards. However, I have yet to find out if those cards can handle the data amount sent from the EX1, when doing 60fps overcranking. I might not need more than the supplied 8GB storage, though. 30 minutes of footage in a day is still a lot to me. I always try to delete 'bad' scenes, since having too much footage just makes editing that much harder. My netbook has an expresscard34 slot, so I could always just dump the data there.

I did research the HMC models as well but really want something that will allow me to do everything manually and something that has enough features to keep me busy for a while... :)

The HF-S does 24mbps and should have a better image but is obviously more expensive.

Epic dolly slides! And the 2.38 aspect ratio is a nice touch too. It's cool how Vimeo supports that.
