Our 8th grade Social Studies class studied the history of immigration in the United States. As part of this, we looked at the poetry of Emma Lazarus and Thomas Bailey Aldrich, who had very different attitudes toward immigration policy. Each student was assigned to draw a political cartoon based on either "The New Colossus" (the Statue of Liberty poem) or "The Unguarded Gate".
