Miss Freedom

Standing fifteen feet tall and weighing two thousand pounds, a female stands atop the cupola of the Capitol. The figure holds aloft a lighted torch in her right hand representing liberty and clasps a sword in her left symbolizing the struggle to protect freedom. These were unrealized ideals for many Georgians when the Capitol was dedicated on July 4, 1889. It took decades of struggle to extend the rights of democracy to all citizens.
