The graphics are procedurally rendered in real-time, and are controlled primarily through musical notation data (MIDI).

The software used for the visuals is Mother 0.3, a free open source program I've developed for VJ-ing with multiple Processing.org sketches.

The music I have also made myself, using all hardware musical instruments. The synthesizers are mostly programmed, but the drums I played live on an electronic drumkit.

Even with an entirely digital production and HD encoding pipeline, the video looks quite a bit worse than what the program does when running in real-time, because of the video compression. Colours are washed out, and some pixellation appears around fine details...

So do have a look at the screen grabs on flickr.com/photos/10401337@N05/sets/72157616429723122/ , and download the better quality video from the link at the bottom of this page, to get a better impression of what it really looks like!

Although for this animation I’ve used pre-recorded multi-track audio and MIDI, my motivation for developing the system used has been to perform with it in a live setting, accompanying a live musical performance.

Towards that goal I am currently looking for musicians/groups interested in my accompanying them!

My musical tastes are I'd say as broad as can be, so I am looking for any musical genre that would work well with the type of visual material I am able to produce: abstract and generated digitally in real-time.

In order for my system to work, the musical performance will either need to be using live instruments, or programs such as Ableton Live, so that I have enough MIDI and audio channels to use as control input for the visuals.

The timeframe for this is until mid January 2010, and I’d prefer to collaborate with musicians living in or near London where I currently live. The collaboration would be free of charge, and the only thing I expect in return is that musicians agree to be interviewed about their experience, so that I can write about it in my thesis.

If you are a musician and collaborating sounds appealing to you, please get in touch!

    Amazing!

What's the track playing in the background called?

    Thanks, glad you like it!

I call the track Maria Louiza, after a girl that was initially meant to sing on it, although in the end she never did. If you want you can listen to my other tracks at: last.fm/music/onar3d

Any chance you would be willing to share the source code to this?

    Hi!

Mother is open source, you can follow the link from my webpage to the Google code page for the svn repository. If you'd prefer that I email the source let me know and I'll send a zipfile!

As for the individual visual synths, I would rather not put the source for those out for the moment.

However, they are themselves based on combining ideas from different simpler examples you may find on the net, the processing forum etc. There is an abundance of examples of processing visuals already!

I use the GLgraphics library for some 2D effects, such as the glowing you saw. That effect is based on a tutorial you will find on nehe.gamedev.net. Although the code there is OpenGL, the concepts apply equally to procesing / JOGL.
