Schools in the San Juan Unified School District are committed to following through with the comprehensive Strategic Plan set forth in 2010. One of the many action plans put in place is phasing in Family Resource Centers in all schools within five years. Through collaboration with school leadership, district staff, parents, community members and parents, that is happening.
Rooms in several schools have already been dedicated to parents and families to utilize for a multitude of purposes. With these rooms, parents have begun to integrate themselves more than ever into the process of educating and supporting their children at school.
"Regardless of family income, education, or cultural background, children whose parents are involved in their education are more likely to succeed academically," district parent coordinator Martha Quadros said. "A Family Resource Center is perceived by parents as an accessible, safe and welcoming place to go and it will support the school's efforts to enhance parent involvement. They give families and staff a place to convene and begin to develop open communication and partnerships between the school and family."
