Love seeing little slices of other cultures. How did you enjoy Singapore?
  • Colin Cabalka 7 months ago
Thanks for checking it out Blake.
Truth be told, this place is amazing.
From beautiful landscapes, orchid gardens, and industrial cityscapes, to beaches, shopping malls, and subway trains, this place has it all! It is like a tropical version of Beijing or Tokyo, and it is cleaner than America.
  • Kaushik 7 months ago
Yes, indeed it looks very neat & clean. I have never been in Singapore, but would love to go, love have food there.

Well, I stayed USA for some years and I enjoyed it, I guess we can not compare USA with any country, USA is so beautifl country, yes Dubai is rocking these days

And our great country India too is rocking.

Haha almost looks like Slumdog. Foreign place, foreign music, shot on a Canon digital camera. They shot some of it on a 1D Mark III. How long does it take you to edit all of this together though??
  • Colin Cabalka 7 months ago
I was thinking the same thing!
This one took a couple hours.

    Hi Colin,

Beautiful work, nicely shot and what long editing I bet. While I think you capture extremely well the feeling of Singapore, I would like you to think about the following: Using the soundtrack from Slumdog Millionaire, a film that has been over commercialized and objectified as THE Bollywood film, you are misrepresenting Singapore. In other words you are "exotifyng" this place. While it certainly might be "exotic" to you, this is how most of the world is because of long historical consequences of colonialism. I don't want too give a lecture here. I just think this my be slightly problematic as you are putting two different cultures together and making a sort of hybrid. Would it make sense to film Paris and put Italian music on top? I hope you get the idea.

Anyway, I was just in NYC and also shot some musicians in the subway and bought their CD. I am looking forward making something like this too but probably not as nice as yours-good job.
  • Colin Cabalka 7 months ago
    Stephen,

thank you! yes it took a bit of time.
I would like you to just understand that putting that slumdog music was my first impulse when i started the video showing little india, which felt the same as the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

The music isnt my interpretation of Singapore, yet it is just an enhancement of the video as it begins with little India. If I would have, however, put a song from Coldplay or Sigur Ros, I am sure you wouldn't have thought I was trying to exotify the place.

    Thanks for watching though!
look forward to seeing your stuff.
  • Stephen Akbeg 7 months ago
    Hi Colin,

As visual art makers, we provide a gateway to these different cultures. I think that it is important for all of us to be responsible and ethical about different cultures. I suggest we all read "Edward Said-Orientalism" before we make films in the East. There is also a 4 part video too on youtube. :

Singapore... gack... a sea of shopping malls and consumerism. Perhaps relative to the United States it might seem exotic but relative to the rest of Asia I found it to be a bore. I'm guessing Singapore's Little India was your focus as that were most travellers arrive there due to the availability of hostels.

Interesting project, nice work... I encourage you to look a little further - the world has so much to offer and in my opinion this is not the high point. There's so much more beyond the time lapse setting on your camera and the gloss of place that's sold it's soul to Americanism.

    /end rant>
  • Colin Cabalka 7 months ago
This is just one of the many places I have visited, and I loved it! Thanks for your compliments, but your rant I think I can do without.

I appreciate your input, but to be honest I had an amazing travel experience here, and I am sorry if you didn't and feel the need to rant to those that have enjoyed this great place, but try not to belittle a place that has made such a powerful impact on the whole world.

    Thanks for watching though!

    Hi Colin Cabalka,

I truly enjoyed both your two videos which I managed to gain access just minutes ago.

Love the one on Wind as you show how nice it is to just relax and enjoy Nature, Wind is one of them and seeing the dancing of the leaves, etc makes one feel there is more to life as we go thro our daily work chores. Your creative video production is highly creditable to me , just an ordinary guy from S`pore.

Your video on Subway in S`pore is superb and awesome, not just cos I am a Singaporean. Am sure you did alot of hard work and video is creative and magnificient and the Tourist Promotion Board should give you an Award for showcasing S`pore.

Did not hear much of the music and just note that the 80:20 rule applies, not all will feel or have the same viewpoint about any subject, be it on S`pore or any other matter.

In basic statistics, there are some who falls on the left 2.5% and the right 2.5% for the normal distribution curve ! Everyone is entitled to their opinions , some of which may be uncalled for, their myopic view of the little negatives but not the bigger positives !

Come Sep 25 to 27 2009, if u can capture the F1 Night Race in S`pore , it will be great and awesome for Vimeo members.

The first F1 night race in S`pore was held in Sep 2008 and I really enjoyed the live coverage on TV.

The night illumination with streets lighting shows the exuberance of the panaromic view of the landscape and building facades around the F1 night racing circuit was indeed memorable, S`pore Flyer, Explanade, etc .

Great Effort and look forward to more of your videos !

Colin - Great concept! This really sparks a lot of ideas!! It almost doesn't even look like a sequence of stills. Pretty sweet. Did you take all the photos and drop them in the timeline after resizing?
  • Colin Cabalka 7 months ago
    thanks Luke!
it does appear to flow as video at some times.
i take all the photos, drop em in the timeline, move em around, shorten or lengthen the frames, then i resize one, and then copy the attributes to all the others of the same megapixel, sometimes ill shoot 1900 by 1200 stills just for video.

    76% of Singapore is Chinese.
    14% is Malay.

This is just how I saw Singapore while I traveled around to many places, there is a lot more to Singapore.

Great work Colin, you must have had the camera glued to your eye over there. Ha, Ha. Very creative & artistic. How many cameras do you wear out doing these? Music went along very well with the photos. I loved the end shot! Thanks for sending it to me. Looking forward to seeing more.

    Great video!!!
This is the vibrant part of Singapore, real life in Singapore is a real bore. I don't even do half the things in video or go to those places yearly. We're more americanized than shown by this short clip. Think Orchard road, shopping, eating, more shopping and more eating and perhaps for some, nightlife at Clarke Quay. That's what we do best. Our culture is just a show put on for tourists. Picking on the best food is probably what we do best, apart from pointless procrastination against everything in life.
  • Colin Cabalka 7 months ago
haha i enjoyed reading your comment,
but i really did enjoy Singapore.

Hi... since you asked my opinion:)
It's interesting to use stills to translate into video... brings a different kind of quality to your experience of this trip... but I think I had a difficult time connecting with it, too many things happening, it became a blur for me... thanks for sharing though:)
