This is great work. I'm really glad you did this with no adapter. A lot can be achieved without one. I think a lot of the times people get a bit too hung up on the technology, and stop seeing it as merely a tool to achieve your creative goal. Instead it becomes a demonstration which seems to exist merely to promote the technology itself.

    Thanks!
    You're absolutely right!
  • Hache 8 months ago
Correct me if I'm wrong but many of these looks with not much DOF are done by zooming in to the object and than getting close to it .. right? if thats tha case well, that actually represents a HUGE problem when it comes to large or big camera movements and working with characters / actors and thats where the 35 mm lenses and adaptaers come in. Other than that nice work and the grading using magic bullet is really nice, but than again that is also technology, so it contradicts Counterbugs afirmatión wich you agree on.
  • Counterbugs plus 8 months ago
I was speaking of technology as in the adapter itself, not all technology. Obviously we wouldn't be here on a website, where we post digital files of our projects complaining about technology in general. Wouldn't that be a little silly?

Its just odd in recent years people seem to care more about the adapter than the camera itself! This all has to do with the fixation of obtaining that film like depth of field. In my opinion people take it overboard most of the time and the depth ends up being far too shallow anyway. Its like a showcase for focus depth, and it doesn't really matter what is actually being focused on. I don't get it. Thats what I was speaking of. Anytime the tools for the art become more of a focus than the art itself, its a bit disheartening. Sometimes people become a little too fixed on replicating the look others instead of just creating.

counterbugs... I second your statement here :)
35mm adapters are way over rated and frankly, I haven't seen one video that impress me with it. If you look, all you see is 'testing' and 'testing' and then any of the adapter use is focusing in and out for NO reason, other that ... hey I can do it. Makes no sense in the movie when used by these tech-loving people.

I'd pay more attention to a story then a adapter or is it shot with a RED or not. These Hv-30's are nice little cams and I have a few of them. Am not into tech that much.

The magic bullet and other editing gizmo is cool, it's part of the process to present a movie. If one shoots that process down then may as well just show raw footage directly from the cam... since editing would be frowned upon :)

You can also do good DOF is you stand back and zoom all the way in to the subject. It works and I've been doing that for a long time. Look at my garden shots.

I do like rebel's videos.... not films as some people seems to call it. It's a video!
    There are no film anymore.
    Video :)
So, everyone is a 'videographer' and NOT a 'film maker'. Only KODAK, FUJI makes film... people USE film in the camera.
So there never was a 'film maker' to begin with.
Bad expression.... but then again it's stupid Hollywood who started this idiocy.

Very Good Job!!! .. how do make this effect, without 35mm Adapter??

    Really Good, Job!!....
  • RebelCutter 8 months ago
    Thanks!
No effect!! Just the manual focus on the HV30.

Wow! I agree with Counterbugs. You have done a great job showing what can be done with minimal equipment.

    Lovely.

Is there a macro setting on the HV30? You got pretty tight in on that ant.

Also, is the manual focus on the HV30 the silly scroll wheel, or do they have a proper lens focus ring. That is the big problem with the lower end cameras for me. The images it captures are great, taking control is not. Thats where an adapter kit comes in strong, better control of focus, not just the look.

What I love about your movies is that with the collection of seemingly random and unrelated shots, when they are cut together and put to your choice of music they gain a context, a meaning, a story almost unravels. This could very easily be a music video for Sigur Ros, the mood and emotion of the content and the juxtaposition really matches, enhances and takes on the mood of the music.

    Thank you for your comment!
There is no macro setting on the HV30!
And yeah, the manual focus is a big problem.

    Influx Media....
There is FOCUS ring that you can buy for $50. look into hv20.com forum and you'll find a cool focus ring that slips ove the camera and still use the lens threads for other things. If you can't find it, give me a PM and I'll give you the link.

  • RebelCutter 8 months ago
Yeah, behind the Neuss Hbf. ;)
    Kennst du Neuss?
  • Caleb plus 8 months ago
Indeed. As I watched this movie I was struck with the feeling that it was a video from my own memory, like I was watching images from my past played out in your creative vision. Well, turns out it dawned on me that the film was shot on the street on which I walked almost every day for the better part of a year! I lived as an American expat in Neuss in 2003-2004 at Josefstrasse 30 (basically turn left at the end of the street you filmed this at).

I truly enjoyed seeing this. It brought back a flood of memories for me, and it was very exciting to see that wonderful spot recorded. Well done, and I thank you for the experience!

    Nice video.

At irvdesign you can find what's probably the best focus ring anyone's made for the HV20/30 camera's. They usually sell out pretty quick but they're worth waiting for, and they're not that expensive, even with international shipping. They're a bit noisy and still require a few turns to cover the whole focus range, but they're probably as close as you can get to a proper integrated focus ring.
  • kruzer 8 months ago
yup, that's the best design and price !
If it's noisy.. then adjust the sound... simple. Attenuate it... or use an external mic.
Nothing can be heard on my videos using the ring.

By the way, I really admire the fact that you don't use a 35mm adapter. I myself, am an HV30 user, but not a 35mm adapter user because I feel that the 'sharpness' is lost, so to speak (no disrespect to 35mm users). This is a great example showing off the HV30's capabilities without the use of an adapter. Keep it up!

Nice creative ideas... the music you pick sometimes don't really work for me... but hey, many people like it so it don't matter what I think.

Hope to see more of your work.

Wie bekommt man sowas ohne Adapter hin? Jetzt bin ich aber gespannt. ;)
