Luke Ritchie’s debut, The Water’s Edge, is a culmination of a two year song-writing journey.
Starting in January 2010, Ritchie started recording a song a week. He released each one as a podcast - for six months. Creating 26 in total, his songs spread through word of mouth, resulting in 8,500 downloads by the time he stopped. (The whole diary is here: lukeritchie.co.uk/podcasts).
The podcasts reached composer Nico Muhly, with a track record of collaborative work with acts such as Björk, Jónsi & Anthony & the Johnsons. Muhly composed pieces for five songs on the album, including opener Lighthouse, and played the piano and harmonium himself. The arrangements have taken 'The Water's Edge' to another level, effortlessly building on Ritchie's original works to create wonderfully rich melodies.
