Made for CVP.com

Independent review of the new baby tapeless Pro camcorder from JVC.

Video shot guerilla style around London.

Music is by Davito called "Disconnect". Thanks to them for the kind permission to use this track. Check them out at davito.co.uk

1080p version in h264 mp4 is available to download. WIll make the 2.3 gb native version available if anyone has the bandwidth to handle it.

Graded with magic bullet looks apart from the bits that say ungraded ;-)

Read my review of the camera here: philipbloom.co.uk/2009/04/17/review-of-jvc-gy-hm-100/#more-2695

Oh my, nice video. You are bit hard to understand in the train parts though...

The mirror mode gag is priceless btw.

Just re-watched the video and noticed the Starbucks Bangkok cup, thinking about buying it so many times but the font is just so ugly :(

I was waiting on this. I put in my order after I watched this a couple times. I still want to see low light performance. and LoLux. It seems to be ignored but I want to see what it looks like. I guess I will find out when these start shipping.

You may want to have a look at 5D Mark II before they start shipping :)

I will using the Canon during my trip to the sates. My only issues are the 30p, sound and lack of manual controls. I may get quite good at it by the end of the trip though! I have a nikon converter so I can use all my nice Nikon Zeiss glass with it

Man Philip... you are such a rebel. Shooting video of security and the police and all. Taking a real risk aren't we. Awesome review and very appreciated.

If you need a permission to shoot video in public places then there is something wrong with your country. And I don't mean it maliciously.

Looks only marginally better than HDV quality. And $3500! They know that Scarlet is coming around the bend right?!?
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
much better than a small hdv camera. Its tapeless and pic quality is superb. Scarlet is around the bend...unfortunately there is a long stretch of road before you get to the bend. Who knows when it will come out! Also this is very much a camera for small, TV production. Can't imagine the Scarlet will be that easy to use. Don't get me wrong, I wish it was coming out tomorrow but I think it is a very different beast.
  • Stephen Lewis plus 8 months ago
Yes, you are right Philio. I meant that compared to my Canon A1, the quality is not leaps and heaps better. Scarlet is very niche, really for cinema use only, so as a video-only production tool for TV, I'm sure this cam is the way to go. I just think that the price is still a tiny bit steep, especially for 1/4 inch sensors.
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
it does need to be cheaper that's for sure. I was thinking just under £2000 would be perfect for it.
  • Joe Shaw plus 8 months ago
Let me just add that I think to do the camera justice you need to see the raw footage or at least download the source file for this upload. I saw some footage on Phil's laptop and it does look really good.
  • Terje Pedersen 8 months ago
I've now seen the downloaded 1080p file on my full-HD TV, its worth downloading :-) Looks very nice.
  • Nevin Styre 7 months ago
also with scarlet and hdv you don't get immediate editing access.
well technically you can do immediate offline with the RED, but in my experience it's kinda a pain unless you have a beefy editing rig, which most in the $3500 camera market don't necessarily have.

  • Stephen Lewis plus 8 months ago
I like your "fancy-dan" editing suite. What is that broadcast monitor on the right there?
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
its a JVC 14" CRT. Essential for colour correction.

Phillip, this video spoke novels to me. I live in Rhode Island, USA, and just returned from a 10-day trip to London. Lo and behold, I come back, and here you are running around the city with one of my favorite video cameras ever. It was truly nostalgic. And the video proved to be very helpful. Thank you much.

All right, all right... StOp the press. Just downloaded and watched the QT 1080 version. Unbelievable... Just got more impressed. I deliver primarily to the web. So I am use to seeing a lot of compression artifacts. One of the ways to fight against compression artifacts is to have the best possible HQ footage to begin with. This mp4 was clean. Could see the foundation make-up and pours on faces. Decision made, getting one. Thank you for your efforts Mr. Bloom.

P.S. Nice Bokeh for a little lens.

Thanks for the review Philip. This camera would be a great step up from my hv20. Not quite ready to drop the coin on your ex1. Here's to hoping they drop the price on the hm100!!!

  • Are you ever going to review the Canon 5D mkii?

i am going to have a Canon 5d Mk2 for my trip to the states courtesy of Zacuto so will probably do a review. Hoping to get the Panasonic GH1 whilst out there too...so much for relaxation days!

Thanks for reviewing this camera. I am really interested to see a side by side of this camera and the HMC-150. JVC has really impressed me by actually considering workflow instead of trying to push their own format/media. Bravo JVC. I would almost give JVC my money even if the image wasn't quite as good as the competition, just because they are considering us low budget shooter/editors.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but would be able to post some footage of low light footage.

    Thanks Philip.

Superb colour, very much soothing to eyes! Thank you for this review.

I am proud owner of JVC GZ-HD7, and this GY-HM100 looks stunning, similar design to HD7.

Some of the images are really stunning, some are very dark, and little low light shooting is also good.

And those SDHC cards are very convenient, no need to keep connect camera while transferring data to computer!

Looking forward to see more footage, and if some on do side by side test of HM100 & HM700, would be great!

Hi Phil. Thanks for the review of this camera. In your website's written review, you mention (in the Likes) that although no overcank feature exists on this camera, you can shoot 720p60 and then "use compressor to convert to 25p slo-mo". What do you mean by "use compressor"? I thought it would be jsut a matter of shooting at 60p and then use clip speed in FC to slow the motion down. Am I wrong about this? Also, on the HM700 review you mention "skewing" and that CCD is better at handling this than CMOS. I don't know what "skewing" is but from the video review I was able to understand that it somehow has to do with fast panning and stuff like that. Since I'm buying a camera to shoot wildlife and fast pans will be very common, could you explain please? Thank you so much.

Wow Philip! Great review! Love your delivery and terrific eye! Wondering how you think this camera compares to the Ex1? I'm looking for a small form factor camera to incorporate into broadcast shooting workflow. I have a 5DMk2 that I like -- but it's not really a substitute for a dedicated video camera. Thanks!

You make everything looking nice, but this camcorder seems to have rhombic shaped aperture, doesn't it?
At 02:15, I noticed rhombic shaped "boké", just like those seen with small consumer camcorders.

    Hi there,

a question about the mirror mode.
Google couldn´t help me in that case.

Does the mirrormode flip the image(vertical & horizontal),
so that i can use a 35mm without flipdevice?

I didn´t get it right from the video.

    THX
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
i am sorry. Mirror mode was my poor attempt at humour to make it possible for someone else to film me!! It's nothing to do with 35mm adaptors. The HM 700 does have an image inverter for 35mm adaptors but the 100 does not.

do you recommend some place to buy this camcorder in europe (I´m from Spain)?

What did you say about sdhc cards velocity? I couldn´t reach what are you telling about it.

What about some places to get them in a really bargain price?

The fact that you just need to drag and drop the files into FCP is what draws me to the HM100. And needless to say, 16GB £25 is a definite seller.

I got team mates in Malaysia that's testing out the HM700 as we speak. They've also done a positive review of this cam.
    youtube.com/watch?v=HvXszxQPQGo

Definitely definitely one of the stuffs I'll be hunting down in my next trip home. Electronics are much cheaper in Singapore. :)

    Saludos.

Great review Phil. As this is an ideal camera for the step up from consumer level, is it compatible with Final Cut Express? What I'm reading tells me - no. But I am wondering if there is a workflow around it? Maybe Square 5? - you did a nice piece on that for the 5d Mk II, and I was wondering if something similar could be done to convert the .mov files into something FCE is more comfortable with?

I Like the fact it is small, so can be carried around like a consumer camera, without lacking image quality.

Professional Graded as well, decent chips etc

Apologies for stupid question, but what is "overcrank"?
  •
  • andy n 3 months ago
overcrank= shooting anything over your native frame rate(ie more then 29.97 if you are in NTSC land)

    bloom,
did you use sticks for this or were you just propping the camera on stuff?

many thanks for this super review, Philip, and the related blog post at your site.

it's people (experienced pros) like you who help people like me (enthusiasts with lots to learn) make purchasing decisions independent of a company's marketing hype and pressure from salespersons on commission.

it's all well and good for me to go to a store and try a bit of hands-on, but i'm not that experienced and able to judge important little details. of course, i've been on a number of forums like dvinfo.net for hours reading feedback and complaints and comparions.

however, actually seeing someone who knows what they're talking about doing a demo of this detail and calibre and explaining things makes a world of difference, and is much appreciated.
