This is our entry that won us 2nd place in YouTube's Project:Direct Competition. It looks so much better in HD.
------------
Nonna and Grandpa (Joe) are fed up with an inconsiderate neighbor who allows his dog to "fertilize" their yard... So, Nonna comes up with a retaliation strategy. However, she decides her granddaughter, Maria, should take some responsibility around the house and be the one to execute the plan.

brilliant film. I am totally impressed with the production values- fantastic cinematography and production design. I love the way that the beauty of the mise en scene is in total juxtaposition to the macabre nature of the story. Too bad you all had to premier this on the crappy you tube! Glad you have it here in HD. It looks divine.

Ah great! Some beautiful bokeh in those shots! Mind if I ask what camera and if you used an adapter?
  • Chris Crutchfield 5 months ago
we used a panasonic HVX200, shot in 1080/24p on 16gb P2 cards and a 100gb FireStore. Also we used the Redrock micro cinema lens adapter with Nikon prime lenses. All edited with Final Cut Studio.

Awesome job, Chris. The cinematography is phenomenal. Great acting, too. I'll bet a little work on the field audio and post mix would have gotten you a first place. Nonna saying "It's poopin' all over" is a little hard to hear and that kind of sets up the motivation for the doggie murder.

Wow! I loved it. How did you come across the music. I loved how it worked with the scenes.
  • Chris Crutchfield 5 months ago
We used some of the loops found in Soundtrack Pro that's in Apple's Final Cut Studio package. It helped Erin, Jacob, and I to choose the music first based on the idea we had in our heads, then craft the story around the music we had chosen.

Fascinating. The grandmother and granddaughter were well-cast. Of course, the dog outshone all the other actors in the clip. Nice work.

Usually not a fan of shorts but this one was good. Now for a tad of constructive criticism :) Could see the camera in grannies glasses outside and the aiming of the weapons would have been better if shot from the dogs POV instead of straight forward. Awesome work though!!

the rebel flags on the end table at :40 seconds are great! How did they make it in the scene? Was this shot in Georgia (or anywhere in the South for that matter).

The Depth of Field was beautiful.

This is an artistic movie. In my opinion it is almost perfect. Why? Just because the dog cannot fly. And if it could fly it would not stay as a hummingbird in front of all that weapons waiting to be killed. I think to be more realistic the girl must point the guns to the flor where the dog was siting. And the camera must be around the flor shooting upward. The director can say she was just thinking about kill not trying to kill, but in the movie the result would be better with the weapons pointing down in the dog direction. Just a detail among all amazing features.

Great stuff. What is your audio set up?
  •
  • Chris Crutchfield 10 days ago
well. we pretty much had only one boom mic for every scene we shot. There was some foley audio added in here and there. And the music was from Soundtrack Pro in apple's final cut studio. It was all scored in Soundtrack Pro.
