    very cool, but no sound
  •
  • It's so loud at NAB that sound is pointless, plus when this plays in dealer showrooms they usually have the sound off as well.

MOS for those that aren't familiar with this:

The term "MOS" is used, on a slate, when a scene is filmed without sync sound (or any sound).
What MOS orginally stood for is still up for discussion.

    The "Mit out Sound" legend
Some of the early directors in Hollywood, whose first language was German, had trouble with the sound with. So instead of saying, " we are recording this scene "without sound" the words came out "We are recording this scene mitout sound. Because this word corruption, MOS means "without sound"

i just read about that yesterday and apparently the German directors would say "mit-out-sprache" which means "without sound" in german

"Out" is not a German word, so it's still some kind of Gernglish.

"Out" translates to "aus" in german. "Sprache" means "speech" and "mit" means "with". But well, one can see how a German director could mean "without sound" by saying that.
  • I agree with you guys, I pulled that definition from Wikipedia. I think they mean to say Yiddish, which what a lot of the old timers were. I call it PolGerman, but it's really more German with lots of Slavic tons in it.

Well actually, mit out sound, would mean "with out-sound" and not "without sound". This makes sense as someone who doesn't speak English well, would think that "out-sound" is a word, and he would say record "with" "out-sound", just like you would say record "with sync sound" for example.

"ohne" in German means without. Maybe there is something there. "Movie ohne Sound" wouldn't be right, but it fits the "o" initial better.
