Very well done. I love the music.
  • Thanks! All credit goes to Lydia Ashton (lydiaashton.tv) for the emotional heart in the score! She composed blind too... didn't even get to see the footage before we put it in.

Just now noticed "the brothers" picture at the beginning. Very well done, and obviously clearer in this extended version.
  • Yes, the redone beginning and ending were mostly for clarity sake. Thanks!

I wish I can do it!

BTW, what did you use to shoot this? By any chance what camera was used? I gather this is a really professional shoot!!!!
  • We used a Panasonic HVX200 with a Brevis35 lens adapter and Nikon primes. So glad you enjoyed it!

Good idea and work!!! I want your creative brains!!!

  • mezza001 2 years ago
Its a deal!!! You have just inspired and urgency in me to do a short film!

I just hope it can be even a fraction of what you all did here!!

    so sad. I love it
  • Our director for this (and my co-writer) and I decided that when we get together to write, we keep coming up with maudlin plots until we can't stand it anymore... otherwise we're both happy, well-adjusted guys.

Wow... I'm very impressed - this is the best short I've seen for quite some time and one of the very best I've every seen!
Thank you so much for this film. Just a couple of days ago my girlfriend and I talked about how she would love to freeze time in moments of perfect happiness... I'll have to share this with her and my friends.

By the way, I agree with HappyCatFilms - I like this version better than the 3-minute-cut as well.
  • Thank you! Sometimes we feel like we shot ourselves in the foot having 2 versions, mostly because people stopped judging it on its own but instead started to weigh in on which version they liked better. But it's nice to know the extra effort (making it 4 minutes) is appreciated. :)

This is the best short I have ever seen. Found it through while stumbling (the user anitab is responsible for getting you so many daily views). I love this extended cut more, because of the great attention to small details you throw in. Also, wonderful acting. I feel like in lots of shorts, the acting is terrible. Every actor seemed fully in their roll.

Awesome video, great storyline, and real acting! I joined vimeo just to leave you a wonderful comment and I will check back on your vimeo page to see if you do some more. I hope other aspiring film makers take notes from you and reproduce something half as amazing as yours.

    Thanks

I wonder why this short wasn't an immediate favourite - I fell immediately in love with in after watching it, and up till now (a day later), I'm still getting the chills down my spine everytime I reach the ending - so sad and yet so soulful.

I'm glad that Jack finally met his wife. *wipes misty eyes*

And I love the sub-message that this video conveys - usually the photographers who take photos don't have much having themselves in it, do they?

I've never watched such a touching work before. It moved me right from the very bottom of my heart. This is one fine short, brilliant work!

The music was beautifully composed - I can't believe that Lydia composed it blind, and yet her piece manages to lend so much feeling to the film *thumbs up*

  • Joseph Hutson 2 years ago
We shot this on the HVX-200 with Cinevate's Brevis 35mm adapter. For lenses, we used the Nikon Prime Lenses. 50mm/85mm were used the most.

Great Great Film. You forgot to turn on the Adapter at 1:33 though :P
  • Joseph Hutson 2 years ago
Actually, what I believe happened was our monitor died without having a spare. This was one of our last setups out on location so, it was a difficult task getting the focus perfect out in the sun without the external monitor. Add to this, the time crunch and the fountains only working sporadically leaving us little time for a second take. :)
  •
  • Masl Tov 2 years ago
The Focus is good, but I think you can see the grain structure of the Adapter especially in the upper left corner. That was what I meant.

The best short film hands down, what did you use to get your sound?
  • Hey Alvin, thanks so much! We recorded the interior sound with the Sennheiser MKH 8050, and exteriors with Sennheiser MKH 416, run into a Sound Devices 302 and then into the HVX.
  •
  • Really nice emotional film. Great concept. Is this original music?

As others have said, brilliant work. It's such a simple story, but well-executed. As I've written elsewhere, filmaking is about storytelling (not preaching) - and this is GREAT storytelling.

I first saw the shorter contest version - I think they both stand on their own quite well.
