In the early 1980s, the Guatemalan army launched a ruthless campaign against civilians suspected of sympathising with the left-wing guerrillas. Hundreds of villages were destroyed and thousands of people were killed or displaced.
In December 1996, under the auspices of the UN, the government signed an agreement with the guerrlllas. This brought 36 years of civil war to an end.
This is the story of the struggle of a group of Q'eqchi' villages to reconstruct their communities and to come to terms with the violence of the past.
