1. using ableton live to send CV signals.
using ableton live and a handful of LFO type wav files to modulate external analog gear. fun stuff.

(if you're not interested in the "how" and just want to see the frostwave spaz out, jump to 3:30 or so.) this stuff *only* works with MOTU audio interfaces (see: volta). this is an easy and free way to send beat-synced LFOs to your outboard modular gear; moogerfoogers, sherman filterbank, little phatty... anything with a CV input.

the LFO wav files used in the vid can be downloaded here: mediafire.com/?yhljroqzy1t

i recommend setting the warp method to "Re-Pitch" to keep LFOs smooth at extreme BPMs. or don't... and get cool glitches.

sweet-thanks dan. I'm gonna load the LFO's into Reason and rewire it to Live and see what happens...

Without knowing much about CV, I can't see how come it only works for MOTU? I saw a video from NAMM about Volta, but isn't it just a question of sending out an electrical signal with changing voltage?

i'm in no way educated in electronics or CV, but i've read that the MOTU boxes are the only major brand whose analog outputs aren't DC-coupled. this allows them to pass a proper CV signal.

No, what you want is audio interfaces that *are* DC-coupled. Other than MOTU's, RME interfaces will work, and there may be others.

ah-ha, thanks for the correction, mateo.

per the RME forum, it looks like the headphone outputs on some of the RME boxes will work.

I've been beating myself over the head trying to figure out how to use the ramp automation in Volta, since I can't make these MIDI dummy clips in an audio track, and since MIDI dummy clips would wreck the whole point of sending CV. This video is a come to jesus moment. Audio waves. Egads and of course. And not only that, but you provide the clips you used! Thanks Dan Kirkhus.

:) you're welcome, hope it worked for you.

    For other DC-coupled audio interfaces:

And if you don't have one, and still want to send CVs to your gear:

Thanks so much for the files. Gotta a couple of Moogerfoogers and a LittlePathy. And a MOTU interface! Can't wait to try that.
