Please report back about the durability of your green wall, and share any challenges you faced on the project. Thanks for sharing.
  •
  • The biggest challenge is definitely the irrigation system. Too much pressure and you get a waterfall and a wet floor. Too little pressure and you get uneven watering. Bear in mind I'm using a DIY rubber hose with holes drilled. This could be rectified with proper irrigation emitters.

Hi Matthew... I just bought a new house and Id like to put a large green wall in my home office (Amsterdam, Holland)... so I have a Q for you since your wall looks so impressive. Did you put the plants in the "pockets" with soil? I was under the impression that you could build one with hydroponics technology. Also, what kind of material is the brown layer? Felt? How thick? Anyways, thanks a lot for sharing and great wall!!
  • Hi Isaac,

We did put the plants in pockets with soil. We left whatever soil was in the pot minus a little to make them fit better. Until the plants have had a chance to root into the felt (synthetic moisture retention cloth) the soil helps feed the roots. This is the way Patrick Blanc plants his walls. To see a better description follow the link in the about to the house tour. I talk about the exact process at the bottom of the article. If you have any further questions or would like me to consult on your wall send me an email. My address is in the description.

    Good Luck,

    Matt

Hi Matt, Your living wall looks great! Yes, please let us know how easy it is to maintain it over time. May I know what kind of plants you selected? I have no gardening experience and would like to try this out. We live in the tropics and are unsure what type of plants to select. Do we have to select plants that only grow on vertical surfaces, or a variety of different plants can be used?
    Thanks for sharing,

Hi Matt, could you possibly give me a few more details about how you did the irrigation? I'd like to make a green wall with the simplest/cheapest irrigation without sacrificing quality.
  • Hi Katie,

Check my blog for more info (link above). In general the cheapest way to create your irrigation system is to buy the cheapest smallest pump that will pump water to the top of your wall through a simple hose. Run the hose across the top of your wall and drill holes in it (my site has details for hole distance and size from Patrick Blanc's description.

    Good Luck,

    Matt

    hi matt ,
is there no alternative for the materials you mention on your blog?,we dont have it here in the philippines but im very much interested in making one green wall.

    thanks

  • There are many alternatives. You could use plywood for the structure, I read the coir fiber can be used as a moisture retention material. Also synthetic carpet liner can be used as a mositure retention material. Use your imagination. Test out a small panel and see what works. You also may want to contact a local green roof maker. Good luck and sorry for the slow response. Better to post on the blog if you want to reach me.
