Hanif's facebook status from April 4th, that is the origin and inspiration for this project.
Today Is My Father's Birthday. A Great Man Who I Am Becoming More And More Like Every Year, A Thought That Terrified Me 5 Years Ago. Today Is Also The Day That Martin Luther King Jr. Was Assassinated In 1968. These Two Things Are Related (And This Is Funny, As I Just Told This Story Last Night), Because As Legend Has It, On This Day In 1968, My Father, The Revolutionary, Angry About The News Of MLK's Death, Went To A Record Store In Brooklyn To Spend What Little Money He Had On A Record To Drown His Anger In. During This Trip, He Met My Mother, Who He Says Was Picking Through The Soul Section. He Always Says He Purchased 2 Records He Didn't Even Want, Just To Get Closer To Her In The Store. I Really Am His Son. Happy Birthday, Dad. I'm Glad You Purchased 2 Soul Records, Otherwise Me And My Siblings Wouldn't Be Here.
From myspace, to craigslist, to a refugee camp in Indonesia, to an arranged marriage in Pakistan, to a classroom of a middle school; these stories are not your ordinary, "we met at a party".
I've found so many people with great stories. This is only the beginning. Check back next week for the rest of these people's stories.
Thank you so much to all who participated in the project! Your stories caused me laughter, confusion and tear s.
