You have a really good sense of aesthetics!
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Thank you Justin, it truly means a lot. It also has a lot to do with the beauty of Japan itself.
  • Justin Gum 7 months ago
Agreed! Japan is such a beautiful place!
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Agreed. It was my first time going there and definitely will not be my last. Have you ever been there?
  • Justin Gum 7 months ago
Unfortunately no. I have only seen montages such as yours. But it is certainly beautiful. I'll go there when I have money :P
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Haha, yeah I definitely recommend going...you wont be disappointed.

The first half really brought me back to Japan! Loved it!
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Haha, I'm glad it did. Was there anything lacking in the second half? Just out of curiosity...
  • Neill Marcelino 7 months ago
Not at all, I just vividly remember some of the places you shot at.
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
    Ah that makes sense. Thanks!

I just got back from Japan, and this makes the stuff I shot look terrible, Im gonna have to go back and try again.
    Nice work Eric.
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Thats really cool Jon. I've always thought of Japan as a really intriguing place, and going there just confirmed that. I'm sure your stuff is not terrible and you should post it up.

I have the HV30 too... I can't seem to get anywhere near the quality you're getting. Amazing.
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Thanks again Kurt. What mode are you shooting on?

  • Mike Kelly 7 months ago
What a great job you have done Eric. The clarity and the music were perfect. The subject ... todays Japan floored me. I was stationed near Yokohama after the Korean war and it is hard to believe how modern Tokyo is. The great Buddha in Kamakura was the only place that looked exactly as it was then. Thanks for the memories!
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Thanks Michael, that's really cool that you previously used to live in Japan. It has definitely really changed over the years and has become much more contemporary. Some of the technology over there is insane, to say the least.
  • Mike Kelly 7 months ago
You mentioned How modern and contemporary Japan is. I missed the graciousness and charm of yesterday. not until Kamakura did a kimono come into view. The Shinto Priests were a welcome sight! On going over this comment, it sounds like sour grapes. I certainly do not mean that. As we grow older, we regress to a happier time. Thanks again Eric
    Mike
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
It doesn't sound like sour grapes at all...it's actually pretty neat to listen to someone who used to live there and know what it was like before. I am sure Japan has kept the tradition more in the areas that I did not travel to (i.e. Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) Unfortunately, I only stuck around in the general Tokyo area just because there is only so much to do in a week's worth of time. In the near future I would love to go to the more rural and traditional parts of Japan to explore the other side of the country.

amazing! howd you get that angle of the shibuya crosswalk? and also where/how did you get access to such high views of the city?
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Thanks man, I got the angle from the second-story of a local Starbucks. Strangely enough, 'Lost in Translation' actually filmed the crosswalk from the same window, which is pretty neat.

The other high views of the city were from a lot of observatories that I went to. One was in Yokohama and the other was in Shinjuku.

just curious, when did you find tv mode to be more appropriate than cine mode?

was it for darker scenes or were you just mixing and matching for experimentation?
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
TV Mode I used for all the scenes that were in the day because it increases the contrast of the picture and makes the blacks more black etc.

As for cinema mode, I used it for the darker scenes or night scenes because it tends to decrease the 'grainy'-ness of the picture.

Eric... very good video. Love the way you film and of course, you never can go wrong with Sigur Ros. I cant wait to go back to Japan with my 5D Mark II. Love the scene towards the end in Kamakura of the Budda statue.

very strong footage here man, with some excellent overhead shots. I have been to Japan as well and I believe that some of your work here definitely captures the key aspects of it. I am not familiar with the HV30 but you did a really good job picking up light during evening/nighttime shots.
  • Eric Tsutomu 5 months ago
    Thanks Dominic, much appreciated.

  • man I love Japan, yo people are very smart and the gear of world , what effects you used ? i mean (people walk back)

Thanks. I primarily edited the whole video using Final Cut Pro--an editing software and I did the effect in there.

Do you use any kind of steady cam?
  • Eric Tsutomu 3 months ago
Unfortunately no. I wish I had one though, haha.
  •
  • Those night shots in Japan are you locked at 1.8? The HV is pretty poor in low light. Give you any trouble in post?
  • Eric Tsutomu 1 month ago
Just shot in Cinema Mode--much less grain. Then punched up the contrast in post.
