FretNot is an exhibition to study the effects of physical constraints on musical composition and improvisation. Here, the fretboard of an electric guitar has been modified such that only notes in the key of E minor (G Major) can be played. This highly constrained instrument allows the musician to think more about expressiveness (by bending strings and focusing on high-level ideas) rather than finger positions.

This project was done in the Tangible Media Group (tangible.media.mit.edu) at the MIT Media Lab.
