Magnificent. I really like what you are doing here, and the vertical format is a nice touch. I am going to show my motion graphics students your work for inspiration!

Very, very inspiring, I love the idea as much as I love the video, I'm currently experimenting with the same camera and similar subject material. Results soon.

Amazing sequence youve shot. Looks truely spectatular! Can you step us through how you did it? What was the speed of the timelapse? What lenses did you use? did you take any photos of the setup?
  • Shawn Knol 2 years ago
    thanks tim!

i just put my camera in burst mode, and used a wired remote to lock down the shutter. i think the fps was around 2 in this.

the dye is being poured into a large fish bowl i got for free (hence, all the scratches you can see in the glass). there was a sheet of white paper behind, lit from both the left and right sides.

the lens was a sigma 105mm f2.8 macro.

I've done something similar, but being more of a longer time lapser (As in, taking the lapses over hours instead of the couple of seconds that the ink drop is.) mine were only mediocre.

As Tim above asked, lenses? suggestions? I too am using a Canon Rebel (XS) so my set up could be fairly similar.

Are these shot using a long, solid burst?
  • Shawn Knol 2 years ago
yup! it was a constant battle over fps, and sequence length. each sequence in real time was probably around 20-30 seconds.

i'm looking at the stats of the XS. it looks like it can do 3fps in full quality jpeg, for an unlimited time? if true, that's amazing! with the huge file sizes, you have plenty of room to add panning and zooming in post.

perhaps, it's time i finally buy a new camera.

the lens was a sigma 105mm f2.8 macro.

If you're buying a new Canon, wait until the new Rebel comes out with full HD 1080p video as well!

I think I'll buy it when it comes out. I love my XS, it does very well, but HD video?

    mmm. I'm so excited.

lol yeah, i was just drooling over the dpreview article on it. i had no idea they were coming out with something like that at that price point. totally stoked!

So, deeply inspired by both this and your oil bubbles one, I went about and made my own.

    Flickr set found here: flickr.com/photos/icecalibre/sets/72157617228333007/

And I might release the video eventually. I don't like the editing, so I'll go back and redo it sometime.

This is bad ass. :) In the beginning it reminds me of liquid mushrooms sprouting out of the ground. Really liked what you did after :41 too. Oh and Amon Tobin is awesome, great music choice. Any chance you could upload this in HD?
