Irish artist Jesse Jones discusses her 2011 film "The Struggle Against Ourselves" that will be on show at Spike Island from 30 June to 26 August 2012.

Jones's work seeks out the false starts and forgotten dreams of the early avant-garde. She reimagines Lenin’s electronic instrument of choice, the theremin, as a medium of mass entertainment and revisits Vsevolod Meyerhold’s post-revolutionary theatre workshops in LA, the heart of the American film industry.

The pleasures of mass entertainment and the thwarted potential of collective action are embodied in a practice that imagines alternative histories and their urgent political implications for the present.
