nice man what is it? and ornament?
  • Shawn Knol 6 months ago
It's mineral oil, with iron dust impregnated within, and with a bit of surfactant to keep it all together. It's being manipulated by a couple magnets (and my breath).

Wow!!!! I want more of that Shawn. I did't know anything about ferrofluid. How do I go about getting some?

i bought mine on ebay. i think it was like 5 dollars USD +s/h.

It looks even better with an actual video camera, and a variable electo-magnet! Check these out:

i love ferrofluid, how much did you buy.. the stuff is so expensive and the dirty cheap imitations that you can make have nowhere near the same effect

i bought mine on ebay. 1 ounce is around $10. you don't need a lot, unless you plan on doing something special with it. that 1 once i got seemed to be more than plenty. what you see above, is about a third of the bottle. just be extra careful when you use it, as it will stain almost everything it comes into contact with.

its pretty much tripple the price here in the uk, im gonna have to invest in some for my next project, i think i will attempt to build an electromagnet too..

It looks like you're watching 3D digital images. Phisics are beautiful, yeah.

shawn, on your flickr photos you say your using a neodymium rod, i'm just curious as to what magnets i should order to make the most out of the ferrofluid, i see quite alot of videos where the fluid doesnt look hugely responsive, obviously there is movement but nowhere near as defined as your spikes. (particulary the circular fluid photos you have taken)

    regards,
    mike
