This is a short video about my Project for my third year on the Creative Music Technology course at BSU. The project is about allowing non-musical people to interact with music, in such a way that doesn't feel alien to them.
So I came up with the idea of allowing the user to 'paint' sounds onto a digital screen, as painting is something that has been a cultural norm all over the world for the past 5000 years at least, and so I figured everyone knows how to paint.
And so using the Microsoft Kinect and MaxMSP (and Synapse), the Sonic Painter tracks and records the users hand movement, and uses this data to draw digital paint strokes on a projector/screen, this data also causes an audio response which corresponds to the direction and speed of the users actions.
