3. Wave Machines - The Greatest Escape We Ever Made
7 months ago
This is the music video for Wave Machine's track "The Greatest Escape We Ever Made", directed by Stuart Lanceley and produced by Token Films.

For this video, I rediscovered the joy and agony of stop-motion animation. It's the reason I first got into film-making.
I created a paper edit first, then shot the band with a Sony Z1 camcorder.
I edited this footage together in Final Cut Pro and then exported every frame as a TIFF. These stills were printed and cut out. It was then re-shot using the digital stills function on a Canon HV30 video camera before all the stills were brought back into FCP once again.
Et Voila!
Hope you enjoy it.
If you want to know more about the band, they have a free download and links to myspace, facebook etc. at wavemachines.co.uk

Many thanks to the wonderful people who helped me with the epic amount of animation necessary, I couldn't have kept going without you! Thanks also to the band for doing so much printing and cutting out, well done to you all!
Stuart

Thanks 25 times-per-second to: Scott Spencer, Fiona Turner, Sarah Sebastian, Ant Hickin, Callum Turner, Patrick McGowan, Libby Lanceley, Jose Diaz, Chris Tomlinson, Dino Deasha, Stephen Clarke, Melanie Gabriel and if there's anyone else i forgot to put your here let me know (i owe you a pint).

nice process and nice shots, specially the one the guy is down in the wood singing...
  • Token Films plus 7 months ago
Yeah I like that shot too, it was hard work though: We shot that on the floor of an old church called St. Brides, kneeling for hours to animate it in the freezing cold!

loved the video feedback in the tv monitor! i have never seen anything quite like this! great job.

i bet 98 percent of the world's population does not understand how much work it takes to make a video like this.
  • Token Films plus 7 months ago
Cheers Tom! I think i was in that 98% until recently.

That was epic! How long did the overall process take?! I have only done one stop motion video ever and it was a pain yet very fun!
    Once again AMAZING!
  • Token Films plus 7 months ago
Thank you! I'm afraid i can't answer your question accurately, as we had to fit this project around other work. But as an example, our record output for 1 day with two people was to produce 9 seconds of footage! And that was for a simple shot, others took much longer!

Well done, loved the 360 part! Would it have been easier to assemble the photo sequences in After Effects or does Final Cut handle it just as well? Can you estimate the combined hours spent cutting out? You must have a good 6000 images right? Amazing work!
  • Token Films plus 7 months ago
Final Cut Pro worked well, i set the preferences to make imported stills 1 frame in duration, imported a folder of stills, dragged it onto the timeline and exported the sequence as a big juicy HD Quicktime file.
Part of the concept was to use looped sections, 50-ish frames long, which gives a nice rough clockwork feel to the animation. This meant I could reuse each set of images in different locations, reducing cutting out time. The band did most of the cutting out thankfully though!

wish i thought of that: making a video image sequence and printing it and stop motioning it!
I love the part on the books when you can see the motion trail.
    smooth animation
  • Token Films plus 6 months ago
I wish I'd thought of it too! The shot on the books was monumentally fiddly. It almost broke me.

"the greatest escape we ever made": how apt the song re video, or is it how apt the video re song..? whatever, they are so very complimentary to each other!
i'm no pracicin' artist; my art is in sincere appreciation of the arts, this vid has my fullest appreciation kudos!
    thanx for the buzz! xo

Great work! I love stop motion and I know how much patience it takes but it's so cool!
I love reflections in water and mirroring objects, the 360° scene and the scene on the floor
Did you made a storyboard before shooting the band?
  • Token Films plus 6 months ago
Grazie mille! I wrote descriptions of each shot and then edited them to the song, like subtitles, to make sure the timing worked. This gave me a structure but allowed me room to develop ideas and experiment with shots as i went along. Some were planned all along though, like the shot on the floor and the 360' spin.

So, you didn't use an HV30 at all? Why is there a tag about it then?
  • Token Films plus 6 months ago
I shot the original footage on the Z1, then I took all the stills on the HV30.
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 6 months ago
Good. Added to a few HV channels for more people to enjoy.

Brilliant! I liked this mor ethan Peter Gabriel's Sledge Hammer video which was quite ne at the time. I thought this was just, magical!
However, I don't see any refference to the Canon HV20/30 anywhere. Keep it tidy gentlemen, keep it tidy.
  • Token Films plus 6 months ago
Thanks FP! Sledgehammer is a brilliant video, i'm hugely flattered by the comparison. Yeah i have rewritten my description slightly, to keep it tidy, because i forgot to mention that i used the Canon HV30 to reshoot all the stills for the animation.
