"I Am A Craft Brewer" is a collaborative video representing the camaraderie, character and integrity of the American Craft Brewing movement. Created by Greg Koch, CEO of the Stone Brewing Co. and Chris & Jared of Redtail Media...and more than 35 amazing craft brewers from all over the country. The video was shown to a packed audience of 1700 craft brewers and industry members at the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference as an introduction to Greg's Keynote Speech entitled "Be Remarkable: Collaboration Ethics Camaraderie Passion."

A program is in development to include even more of America's amazing craft brewers. Please stay tuned!

Greg & Company: Awesome job in presenting the craft beer face to the world of fuzzy yellow beer drinkers. Not smug, not arrogant (sorry Greg) but confident and inclusive. Missing CBC this year but there in spirit. This brings it home.

Great video that speaks to me at all kinds of levels, including my love for Craft Beer and my love for my nephew Jared who is scary-talented!

Uncle Kelby, you're the best. The feeling that we've had from the reception has really been ineffable. These people are the American spirit... scratch that, the HUMAN spirit personified and it was a privilege to get to share their story in such a way.

Great Video. I actually missed the video but saw a lot of the presentation and Greg was an amazing speaker. I actually interviewed him shortly thereafter and the video will be posted at brewpot, com in the next week when I am done editing. Also it wasn't 1700 people, it was more like 2300! Huge and awesome event!

I hate to piss on the parade but this video does not exactly shout inclusion at me. Are there really no non-white craft brewers in the USA?
  •
  • rodrigo soares 10 months ago
    dear stephen,

it doesn't matter if it's a blond, brown or red ale; all of them will get you high!

ps: you can't change american history; at least not the one behind...
  • Stephen Oliver 10 months ago
rodrigo - I quite agree with you about both beer and history but you can make sure you don't repeat the latter. I am all for repeating the former.

This is an outstanding piece of filmmaking. Would love to know more about the production. What kind of cameras and who did the editing? Fantastic work.
  • Redtail Media plus 10 months ago
Thanks Mark. It was actually shot on 2 cameras. For most of the brewers, we sent them a little canon vixia, a link to some operating instructions (which are kind of funny and might be posted in the near future) and had them record the spots themselves. Since we did this on a tight budget, we found this to be the most affordable way to get as many brewers as we did in the time frame we were working in.

For the local brewers (and some PA brewers) we shot them with our HVX200. We used a brevis adapter and Nikon 50mm, 200mm, and 18-24mm lenses.

We cut the piece on one of our FCP stations here in Long Beach.

Somebody cut this video. The section on 'I helped brew one of these beers', and Koch's 'walk and talk' are missing. Why was this done?
  • I Am A Craft Brewer plus 10 months ago
Joey Jo Jo - Yes, you are correct. That longer version you describe is the "Keynote" version with stuff in it that was specifically oriented to the Keynote Speech at the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference where the IAACB was first shown. That "Keynote" version as been moved to a new spot...it's the other video you see on this Vimeo channel.

The "Regular" version is the one here, and it's 3:07 long. The "Keynote" version is 4:09 long. Please share whichever version you choose.

Thanks for asking. Glad to be able to clarify! -Greg.

great work on the video and audio and in particular the lighting is amazing. the content however...wow. They all come off sounding like blowhards...a real disappointment. There is nothing inherently wrong with corn or rice in a beer; it's all in how you use them. Corn has been used for a long time as a brewing and distilling grain and it's an essential grain of the New World. Rice is used in Japanese lagers for a complete fermentation to give a crisp finish. Does EVERY beer have to be a 1.075 OG and 57 IBU? What, we all have to follow the Reinheitsgebot now? This video reminds me of what's inherently wrong with the craft brew movement: wayyy too high on their work. If you make something that's good, let it speak for itself.
  •
  • joey jo jo 10 months ago
Not too high on their work at all, considering what they have given us. You want to see a movement too high on itself, try the BMC monstrosity. King of Beers my ass. lmfao

It's about finding a good brew and if I that can happen for me by getting a brew that was made in my community that's a good feeling. Of central Iowa beer makers that I often consume include Court Ave Brewery, Raccoon Brewery, and Olde Main Brewery.

I'm taking Friday off and driving over to Fearless Brewing just for their spectacular cream ale and IPA. Then I'm having folks over for BBQ and som homebrewed honey lager! After dinner we present a vertical tasting of Hair of the Dog's Doggie Claws for anyone interested in savoring this mana from Alan. We'll begin the evening with a viewing of this video and a salute to Stone for giving a voice to so many dedicated craft brewers. Salud!

I love craft beer, and I also love RICE/CORN in my beer. (Uh oh, I said it!) It doesn't have to be one or the other. When I'm on my couch watching a movie, I enjoy something with more taste, like a bock, an IPA, or an APA. At the ballgame, when I'm thirsty and want to pound a beer or two, or just want to be out all night, I'll order Bud/Bud Light. This is the major problem that I have with this video. They make it sound like it's got to be one or the other. These guys aren't going to convince me that there's something wrong with drinking American-style lager.

Fine work...its a testament to the script (and everyone's belief in the words) that everyone does such a good job on camera, even though many were shooting it themselves, with no "director". Did you tell them how to light, too?
