Music is by The Album Leaf "Twenty Two Fourteen" thealbumleaf.com/
Amazing band that you should check out! If you haven't heard them before you should really go and listen to their music. It's really emotional and inspiring.

  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
Absolutely brilliant Matthew! I know you have the HV30, as do I, so may I ask which lens / adapter you are using? Or what you're using that's not part of the stock HV30?

You're quickly becoming my idol on Vimeo. ^_^
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Hehe, thank you Mitchell! I actually don't use any adapters or anything besides the naked HV30. I really want to get a lens adapter sometime soon. I just put the HV30 on manual focus and always have a it zoomed in a bit to get some depth of field in there. Thank you so much for the really nice comment, man! I appreciate it!
  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
I appreciate the reply Matthew. There must be something I'm missing, as I can't seem to get nearly as much DOF as you do in your videos. Even with MF on and zooming...

    Got a special trick?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Hmm, I'm not sure then. I just make sure the camera isn't zoomed all the way out, I usually have it zoomed in almost to where it reaches the "blue no-go zone" on the zooming monitor thing, and then quickly focus in on my shots. That usually does it for me. Try keeping it zoomed in almost to the blue zone. Keep in mind, this will make your shots less steady, but it's great practice to learn the art of the steady hand. It's helped me quite a bit. I hope this helps man.
  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
Ah, yes I see now. It also helps to shoot in Aperture mode. Shooting in CineMode gave me almost no shallow DoF.
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
CindeMode didn't give you any shallow depth of field? That's the mode I usualy shoot in. It's strange it didn't work out for you. Either way, I'm glad you're testing it out and that the aperture more is working out for you.
  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
For some reason it didn't give nearly as much... Thanks for the help!
  • Allen Ellis 7 months ago
I don't use the HV30 but make sure your iris is open as much as possible, as well. Along with making a more shallow depth of field, this has the side effect of making things brighter, so the typical way to compensate is to use a faster shutter speed.
  • ⾺ Dan Huston plus 7 months ago
    Hi Mitchell

I'm totally butting in here - hope you don't mind Matthew haha!
Before I got my macro lens and my tele lens, I watched a video by Videopia (Eric) about DOF - here it is:

    vimeo.com/1213261

I am self taught and still learning but I found this very informative. Hope it helps...
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Also Mitchell, I'm not sure if opening the iris all the way is going to help all the time. Sometimes it's best to play it safe. When working in uncontrolled lighting situations opening the iris all the way can blow out your colors to a horrible degree and your footage is screwed (only when you're trying to shoot very color things like autumn trees or something). If the iris is open all the way on overcast days and you barely get the sky in the shot, the sky will get very hot white and possibly ruin the shot. I've screwed up quite a few times while playing with the iris in the past. I say if you're in doubt on whether opening the iris all the way is a good idea or not, just shoot everything flat and adjust the brightness and saturation in post...this way at least your footage isn't harmed by unwanted light and color degree hot spots. This is just what I've experienced.
  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
Thanks for all the help guys! I will certainly take your advice to heart when I take my camera out next. =)
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Hey Dan! Thanks for showing the video! That is exactly what I was trying to get across earlier! haha. But Mitchell, don't zoom in too far. The "blue zone" on the zoom indicator is a warning that your image is now starting to lose its crispness, and the graininess will start visibly showing up on playback.

Nicely done... did you use magic bullet looks for the color? Im trying to get my arms around how to increase saturation and achieve an overall 'look' like you've done here but either under do it or over do it... your footage looks great.
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
I just use regular color color correction and brightness/contrast settings. Thank you for the comment!

  • Vaun Raymond plus 7 months ago
Another brilliant piece, Matthew. Your work is always full of surprises and unusual techniques. I especially love your use of shots canted 90 degrees to the side.

Would you mind if I show this piece to my class at the Art Institute of Seattle? I'm teaching a Fundamentals of Video class, and I'd like to show "Petal" as an example of unorthodox composition that really WORKS.

I'm also still curious about how you achieve such smooth playback on Vimeo. You've said in the past that you shoot at 30p and "render out" at 24p. What software are you using to do this? I've tried exporting 60i and 30p video from Final Cut Pro as a 24p Quicktime movie, and the results look awful. The only way I've been able to get smooth playback on Vimeo is to actually shoot and edit in 24p.

Let me know if you'd ever like to come and do a short guest lecture at the Art Institute. I believe I can get you a small stipend for screening a couple of your pieces and answering students' questions. If you're interested, contact me at vaun@u.washington.edu.

  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
That sounds great, Vaun! Share away! I'd love for you to show your class the video. Do you need a raw file or the video for less compression?

People criticize me for not being a fan of Final Cut Pro. I own it and still prefer to use Sony Vegas. I have no idea what the issue is for it not letting you render out like that. It does sound kind of strange to render 30p out to 24p, but Vegas does it flawlessly. I think the Art Institute has Sony Vegas hidden somewhere in their labs. I'm not sure where, though.

I might be willing to go and speak in your class. I graduated about a year ago from that very school actually, haha. I had some amazing professors. Tell Dan, Lynn, Kenny, and Don I say hi. I hope to hear from you soon, and let me know how you'd like me to get "Petal" to you. Take care!
  • Greg Stanton plus 7 months ago
Matthew, I recently subscribed to your videos and have really enjoyed them, you've got real talent. I am using a Canon HF100 and I purchased Vegas 9 Platinum a couple of weeks ago. I've been trying to render 24p videos with little success. 60i to 24p seems to crash Vegas; 24p to 24p yields colors way out of whack. When rendering, do you use Render As...Video for Windows (*.avi), Template: HD-1080-24P YUV?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Hello Greg, thanks for the kinds words. I'm not sure why it's not working, but I render out as an .mp4. Have you tried that yet?
  • Greg Stanton plus 7 months ago
Hmm, I tried .mp4 and it kills Vegas. I'll search Sony's site for help....

Thanks for replying and for offering to provide me with a high-res copy of "Petal" for my class. It's a nice surprise to learn that you graduated from the Art Institute. I graduated from there in 2001, so I've known Dan, Kenny and Don for a long time, and I agree, they are terrific!

This coming Wednesday I'm doing a class about composition, and I'd like to show "Petal" about 9:30 after the students screen their first "B-roll" projects (I'm afraid that if I show your piece first, no one will want to screen their own stuff).

I could simply show "Petal" from Vimeo on the LCD projector, although it wouldn't quite to justice to your piece. It would be nice to screen it on a TV monitor off of a DVD if I could get one from you.

It would also be great if you want to come speak to the class, although I don't want to impose on your time.

Please let me know if you would like to come in on Wednesday or if I could come pick up a DVD from you before then. Otherwise I'm sure screening it off Vimeo will be fine and that your piece will make a big impression on the class.

    Thanks again!

I can burn it on a data disc only right now. I hope that is okay. The disc will only work in Macs. My DVD burner isn't quite working right now. I could transfer it online to a file sharing site for you to download. Would that work for you?

    Matthew,

Yes, it would be great if you could send it to me online as a data file. Do you use Yousendit.com? I can try importing what you send into Final Cut Pro and then burning it to a DVD.

You mentioned that you can only burn Mac discs. Does this mean you have a Mac? If you do, how do you use Vegas? I understood that Vegas only works on PCs. If Vegas worked on Macs, I'd go buy it tomorrow, based on your recommendation and how well it works with 24p conversion.

    Thanks,

    Vaun
    vaun@u.washington.edu
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
I don't use a Mac, but for some reason when I make a data file it'll only work on Mac, haha. I'm going to get a new DVD burner soon, though. I wish Vegas could be used on Mac, but unfortunately not. I'll try uploading it to yousendit.com I use a couple other ones too, so if that doesn't work I'll give you the link to one of the other ones.

    Hi Matthew,

Beautiful work. Sorry to keep pushing for details, but I'm really interested in replicating the look you've gotten. I understand that you've shot this at 30p and edited in Sony Vegas. You say that you then render the project out to an .mp4. So from the dropdown menu in Vegas do you 'save as type' MainConcept AVC/AAC? Or the Sony AVC? And do you then change the frame rate to 24 within the custom options of that type?

I'd be really grateful if you could let me know. Just playing around to try and find a workflow that gives me images I'm satisfied with (and yours come pretty damn close!). Thanks.
