Philip, incredible job. The imagery in this piece is stunning. What lens('s) did you shoot with on the Letus?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
Thanks Nick. The usual culprits. 17-35mm nikon f2.8 zoom. Sigma f1.8 20mm. zeiss 100mm f2 macro, zeiss 85mm f1.4 and the 80-200mm f2.8 nikon zoom.

Nice to shoot something beautiful after all my mucking around with the video blogs. Fun as they are, my love is this sort of film making.
  • Nick Keating 7 months ago
Haha I hear ya on that.
  •
  • You b_stard, I wanted to go there with you and do this shoot! I don't know how you can shoot, edit and grade these things so fast. Whatever, it's f--king great.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
sorry sir. But we will make gold soon together!
  • Well put, considering Rhyolite was a gold rush town.

Love the colors! Did you use a dutch head for some of those shots?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
    nah, just off balance head.

Excellent color work, as usual. :35 is my favorite composition. The fantastic DR you kept, in conjunction with matching tones/exposure makes it feel like a painting. Huge fan of people making use of shadows in time lapses, so points there! I'm apprehensive about the vignetting though. I guess it's not my taste. Regardless, fantastic compositions, colors, and pace.

(Glad you kept the Morricone track!)
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
Cheers Jon, it was your comment that made me keep it. I went with the strong vignette to emphasize the old feel to it.
  • Jon Coy plus 7 months ago
It certainly did embody an aged sentiment. It felt more natural to me the second time (I was really tired and a wee bit cranky when I saw it the first time). Once again, great work as always.

    phil!
this is tom guilmette from tom guilmette dot com...

you make a madman like myself look "lazy" by pumping out all this stuff. nicely done.

what the hell did you do to pass the time with joe during those timelapses? did joe drop some of his lunch in the desert?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
tomguilmette.com?! wow. Isn't it like 3 am there?!

Joe went off with the 5dmk2 and i just sat with my top off in the sun giving myself skin cancer. I did a fine job!

Wow, yeah i tried keeping up but there's no way, you are a machine, between NABing, tweetering, emailing, shooting, blogging, editing, exporting, grading, and uploading you still found time to get married and flood a room? all in one week, im tired just thinking about it.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
you missed out a few things there Christal but I can't talk about those ;-)

Still got another blog to edit from my road trip too and did a half hour interview with macvideo.tv as well which should be online soon. Oh and then there is a proper 10 minute NAB round up coming on Monday!

Was the panning shot at 1:30 done without the Letus? I've only had my Letus for a few weeks but I've noticed whenever I pan with my Letus, I get an odd stuttery effect.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
yep. all done with Letus. What shutter speed are you shooting at? The Letus won't add stutter, the camera might...
  • Old Dead Eye 7 months ago
I've tried a lot of different shutter speeds and frame rates, even turned the shutter off, but it's still present. It tends to be worse on very slow pans. I've also noticed that if I pan lets say, left , it'll quickly jump right for a frame or two before going the correct way.Very strange.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
    turn steadyshot off!!!

Phil: As always, exquisite interpretation through your Artist's eye...

    Two questions:
    1. Is Magic Bullet Look really that much better than FCP's Color and worth the extra software and cost? Judging by your work, it appears so, but just wondered what your thoughts were on that?

    2. I was told last year when I bought the Letus Extreme that I couldn't use zoom lenses on on it, but you appear to be using at least two zoom lenses. And they appear to be working just fine for you. Is that so?
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
It's much easier to use Kevyn..
You can you use fast f2.8 constant zooms no problem with extreme.

Wow! Phil, I think this is my favorite of your work that I have seen thus far! The location was incredible, the time lapse shadows are amazing! Excellent composition!

I recently shot my first documentary and I did some time lapse, I drove out in to a field, set up shop and listened to an audio book for while...ha ha, no desert sun just an annoying amount of wind!
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
    thanks Matt

    Nice.

I'm interested in your answer to Kevyn's Question..

Is that so?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
yes it is. it's intuitive, powerful and FAST. I cut and graded this short in an hour.

Zooms are fine as long as they are FAST!! They need to be constant f2.8 apertures like mine. Slow f4-f5.6 are useless with adaptors.

Phil, as usual, beautiful work. My favorite now I reckon.

    2 questions please?

    1. What makeup is your computer, because I can't get MBL to work fast enough on my Pentium Duo 3 Ghz, so I don't even bother with it currently.

    and

    2. I watched it with HD off and the image was crystal clear and spectacular, how the heck did you render it?
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
