Paul has spent his life being mediocre. An aspiring writer with questionable talent, he has collected over the years, reminders of rejection and heartbreak—turning the people in his life into protagonists and antagonists, turning disaster and disappointment into themes and motifs. Paul has something to prove and eventually publishes his first book based on that angst, becoming a success. Trying to write his follow up, Paul is stuck. Now that he’s accepted and successful he doesn’t have anything to say. He eventually decides that if the world won’t reject him, he’ll create his own rejection, sacrificing happiness in favor of drama. His "revenge" is absurd, turning people in his life into narrative obstacles for himself to overcome.
