Rising of the Moon is a song of Irish Rebellion from the Emmet Insurrection of 1798 when the Irish tried to push the British out of Ireland. The Rising of the Moon is the code phrase that was passed along the valley to let the Irish rebels know that it was time for the insurrection to begin. It was a call-to-arms that told the Irish to put their pikes on their shoulders and gather together. The Molly Maguires would have known this song. Code phrases were part of the make up of secret societies like The Molly Maguires. KentCourtney.com
