In his long and distinguished career, Lord Patten has held the positions of Member of Parliament; last Governor of British Hong Kong, overseeing the return of Hong Kong to China; Chairman of the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland; European Commissioner for External Relations; and President of the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Lord Patten is currently Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Chairman of the BBC Trust, and a Life Peer in the House of Lords.
