Last month I was hired by Director Mike Marriage of Lunarfilm.co.uk to DP a trailer for the big screen to be shown in movie theaters around the world.

NT LIVE is a groundbreaking concept of putting on plays at the National Theatre in London and broadcasting them live to cinemas all over the world via Satellite.

The first play is "Phedre" on the 25th June with Helen Mirren

This was the first time my work would be shown on the big screen and the first time anything I have shot has been transferred to 35mm film. I have yet to see it in print but soon I hope!

It was shot on the Sony EX3 with the Letus Ultimate and mostly Zeiss Nikon lenses. Lighting was with a mixture of Kino Flo Diva's and Dedos.

The voice over was done by the great John Shrapnel. The Helicopter shots were done on the F900. All shot 24p.

Great shots at 00:04 the pupil closure but the light isn't changing, what is the trick? Slomo?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
the light did change. the light turning on shot was done after.

Some pupils have a slow reaction time to light ;)

Great work Philip, you can be proud!

WOW! I'd say this is some of your best work yet Philip. And I'm a big fan of your past videos, so that is meant as high praise indeed!

Did you light the National Theater building for the aerial shot?

The NT is always lit, the colours used depend on the day.

Nice job, very clean. Simple. For some reason though, and I don't mean to be critical, my apologies, but it almost looks like stock footage in a way. Which is different from your previous work I've seen of yours. It's almost like your style of shooting was lost in the project. Still, very well done, again, don't mean to sound critical. I'm a total fan. But for some reason this looked, I don't know, very UN Philip Bloom like. :-) I still love your work though, please don't hate me. Just giving my honest opinion. :-)

Shame about the cars/buses on waterloo bridge all going backwards, and the dot-matrix sign scrolling the wrong way (during the final aerial shot) :-)
  •
  • congrats Philip, been following your work, keep inspiring!
