Short film by Joe Shaw.

On his last day at work, an ageing projectionist locks himself in his projection room and instead of showing the scheduled blockbuster, shows the first film he saw.

I shot this film a few years ago, but decided it was time to update it and get it up online. The original was shot on S16mm and only existed on digi-beta. The film has been uprezzed to HD for viewing online.

I didn't have all of the original audio material - so it's a bit rough around the edges, but the story remains the same...

    Joe,
Thanks for sharing, a very apt piece in reflection of the current time that we are all experiencing. I have a friend who is a projectionist and this made me think of him.
I really thought the lines ‘I have made nothing, destroyed nothing…..’ was exactly the same question I was asking myself a few years back.
If I reflect about this film and the echo, I think that this is more a complete story within the format of a short film. I like your style that you employ with the actors and scenes, and you know you should be making more of these….best wishes Mark

Nice one Joe, it was amazing...
I think the strongest line of the film to me was
when he said "the projectionist is the final link in the chain the begins with an idea in writters head."
    Great work.

    Wonderful work.

Really an excellent cine/drama and elegantly restrained.

I have recently explored a similar theme (less successfully) . Link below:

I am also very interested in the GH1 and I hope you can find the time to publish some more footage of this highly rated SLR.

    Bob,

Thanks for watching the film. I'll check yours out.

I'll be shooting more GH1 footage soon, so keep an eye out.

"Passing Through " and "The Echo" are outstandingly written, acted, shot and directed - exactly what is missing in tv and film. Thank you for sharing.

    What camera did you use?
  • Joe Shaw plus 3 months ago
We shot on Super 16 - can't remember the camera probably an Arri SR2..

    Good film by the way.
I'm a film student (pretty much just started), and I'm trying to decide what camera I should get as an upgrade to my MiniDV camera. Originally I was thinking of getting a good HD camera, but I really like the look and feel of film and I think that even if I get HD, I'm going to be emulating that look anyway. I've heard a lot of people go digital because of dailies and cost and such, so I was wondering if film actually isn't as bad as some people say. What's your opinion since I believe The Echo was shot on digital (am I right?), so you've worked with both mediums.

Thank you. Simple economics will dictate shooting digital. Shooting film is much more expensive. You have higher rental costs, you have to buy the film, develop it, telecine it etc etc. For a film student, my suggestion would be something like the Panasonic GH1. It's affordable, you get to play with real lenses including cine primes if you want. I would say the best thing you can do in terms of studying film is just shoot as much as you possibly can.

I love the fact that I shot Passing Through in film - but I wouldn't do it again if I had my time over. There is still so much to learn and learning it on film is expensive. However, get a GH1 or similar (Canon 5D if you have the money or whatever supersedes it) and you can just keep learning for nothing.

    Hope that helps.
