I discovered a traditional blacksmith's forge on the National Trust's Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire, and Simon, the estate's Forester, allowed me to shoot this short piece to show the process of forging traditional iron nails.
In the cramped and very dark conditions of the forge (no lights used, in fact there's no electricity in there) it was a fun challenge. Of course, working with red hot metals is not the sort of situation in which you can make any demands as a director, so I moved around the forge as best I could, trying not to get in the way, grabbing different angles as Simon worked, and edited the piece together matching the action where possible. I'm quite happy with the result.
