Fished an overnighter on the Norfolk Canyon Thursday-Friday (7-8 June 2012) with Mike K, Doug O, Ron, and Steve. Left Hampton around 10 am Thur with lines south of the canyon on the 450 line in 45 fathoms. Trolled east then north towards the canyon. Slow going, boxed 2 nice YFT and 2 mahi before losing the light. Talked to the Flying Scud who had 9 and got covered up again late in the day....great job Flying Scud.
Night fishing was a total bust. Steve even came through with fresh butters that we chunked all night. Lots of squid around but no tuna marks under the boat all night. Not a single pull. My nicely rigged sword bait never got even nibbled on. Only pull we got was a shark that ate my sword light, cutting the cord and light gone (lost one last year to a shark).
On the troll before 5 am, still mostly dark. We could not even see where the lines were being set, had to guess. Line goes off at 5 am but breaks off. Ten minutes later I get a single. There was only one other boat fishing that early, we just called him center consol. He found some early fish too.
We normally take turns cranking but I told my crew that if you get a fish on while jigging a line, that fish is theirs. That was a good idea because many of our bites came from the crew jigging lines. Steve got all 3 of this fish while jigging. We came across a big blob on the FF and I yelled at the guys to jig, jig, jig and we went 4 for 6 with total chaos. Several doubles after that. Fish were keyed in on meat, no plastic got bit. Ended the day with 13 YFT most in the 40-50 lb class. Probably lost that many with pulled hooks and tackle failures.
Great working with Terp, Get A Net, Reel Estate, and several others I forgot who I was talking too. I'm already checking the weather for the next window. Thanks to my crew who hung in there to the bitter end.
