In the Autumn term 2011 the Life & Deaf Association worked with deaf children in Greenwich to create a professional short film based on a ‘collective poem’ made up of lines from over 50 of the poems on our website.
On 29th March 2012 we held an event to show the film for the first time as well as other creative work based on the 'collective poem', including an audio poem which was interpreted in British Sign Language and a visual/sign performance by deaf students in Greenwich. There were performances by the acclaimed professional poets Richard Carter, John Agard and Grace Nichols.
There was an exhibition of photographs and framed poetry in the Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer. Many of the children who came along to the Life & Deaf workshops in May and July 2011 recognised themselves or lines of their poetry during the event!
This was an incredible experience for the young deaf poets who saw their work being valued and celebrated by a large audience in this prestigious venue.
