ICEHOTEL, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. November/December 2011.
This video covers the building process of Kraken's Lair. An art suite designed and built by Christian Strömqvist and Karl-Johan Ekeroth (PinPin Studio). It took the two of us about 200 hours to complete this horrific scene of the sea monster, grabbing a defenseless ship to pull it down to the dark, cold ocean floor.
The Kraken is a mythological beast that originates from the northern parts of Norway and Iceland. For centuries, sailors and fishermen has told dreadful stories of this monster. In 1830, the English poet Alfred Tennyson wrote:
Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.
A huge thanks to Edvin Nahlin for letting me using your killer music in the video. It's awesome!
Also a huge thanks to the artists and staff at ICEHOTEL. You're amazing!
