I did a very quick comparison of the Nikon D5000 and Nikon D90. If you are wondering how they compare in weight and size, buffer, shutter sound, LCD quality and how they actually look sitting side by side, check it out.
All questions and comments welcome.
Forgot to mention the memory cards used in both cameras are Class 6 SDHC.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike! Can I use also manual lenses with the d5000 or just with the d90?

Good video. Is the D5000 cheaper?

  • Mike Kobal plus 7 months ago
Quark84, you can use manual lenses with the D5000 but there is no communication between the lens and the body. You will have to use Manual exposure settings and MF. JK, the D5000 is cheaper.

I'm sorry why would you go with the d90? through out the video you kept saying they do prety much the same...

Do yo own old lenses or what is the reason??
  • Alexander 4 months ago
Nikon still makes a few lenses that use the drive screw to focus, they are cheap and light. For example my 50mm lens is like that and it only cost me $125 brand new.

    Hi, very good job. thanks.
as a picture quality is that same on bot? I saw the sample pictures on web for both camera, D5000 has a less sharpness and the quality is it true? pls help me I like the screen on D 5000 but it has a quality diff i will go for D90?
Can u please post some sharp Portrait on both camera?
    thanks.

Hmm, the screen is a nice feature. It can protect itself if you fold it inward.. but then again. I've seen a lot of handy cams with broken screens. It's a fragile system.
Most common photo cameras have fixed screens and there is nothing wrong with using it. So if you ask me I'd go for image quality, control and durability and get a D90 while you're at getting a DSLR that does video.

(or wait for something like the next D400 or something if your budget allows it ;)

Mike, please help me! I am stuck between the 2. I am new to all of this so would the D5000 be more helpful? I would probably just shoot my 2 small children at first. Just basic stuff...I like the fact that the D90 is sturdier but would an amatuer be able to work with it?
    Thank you, Joyce

I apologize in advance for asking a lot.... but I cannot resist knowing your opinion.

Thank you for the great comparison, u made things easy for me. I have an old Nikon F70 and with that an AF Nikkor 35-105 mm lense. Now I am in a dilemma as I'm about to buy my first DSLR(as I'm planning to go into serious portraits, bridals and model photography). I want to use my AF Nikkor 35-105mm lens with my new cam. Should I buy Nikon D90 or D5000? Although I am a certified photographer :P I practiced very little photography over the years which is why I am finding D 5000 more user friendly and easier. D300 is too expensive! What do u suggest?
    D5000 or D90?
Would AF Nikkor 35-105 work with D5000 or not?
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
    the D90 of course. :O)

Wonder why you chose the d5000 over the d90 for video? Just bought the d90 for video purposes. I like the fact that the lcd is larger on the d90. I think the d5000 has audio built in for video which is good.

swivel LCD and low angles. much easier to use

Thanks for the info. If I may beg for some more help, I have a few questions.

Does the D90 have an interval shooting mode for time-lapses. Do you think the D5000 would be worth buying over the D90 if this mode were important to you?

    Thanks a ton!
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
no time lapse, you can probably get a programmable remote to do that.
