Everything is ungraded straight out the camera. Some shots are underexposed and I thought about bringing them up in post but I wanted to really not touch the image at all so you could get a better idea. Don’t forget this is the first time I used the camera. Much better stuff will come.

I will be finding a host for the uncompressed version soon so you can see it without the h264 compression.

Shot at the ReFrame collective shoot out in Austin Texas. HUGELY fun!!

Looks beautiful. Been using the d90 but the footage is just SO compressed...
This might be a stupid question but whatdo you use to get your Nikon lenses on there?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
using a adaptor from China, just tried it. works a treat.
  • Arvid Niklasson plus 7 months ago
does it have a name? :)
Would love to see some footage.
    thanks for the review btw.

    Thanks Mate. Looking pretty good.

Some shots look a little over exposed to me, maybe some white crushing going on but low light in the bar really impressed me. Still on the fence about this camera. Great DOF, form factor, price, but the codec is a problem for me. Plus lack of live HDMI out.

Guess we will wait and see for some uncompressed footage to surface so we can look at any artifacts that the codec may cause.

Thank again tho, lets see some more!!!

yep some under, some over. just getting to grips with camera. this is NOT my finest work. Just wanted to show what is was capable of out of the box.

you should be, its ridiculous for the size and price.
  • oh and thanks for posting the download version as well. If you didn't tell me this was a little DSLR it looks like you were shooting on an A1 or a HMC150 with an adapter if not better..very cool.

Thanks Philip! Looking forward to seeing other stuff you do with this camera, especially 60fps re-timed to 24
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
think i can only do that in motion jpeg but will give it a try!
  • Akira Wing 7 months ago
check out Hunter Richard's 60fps slow mo test if you haven't. Cool stuff: vimeo.com/4405946

i can do it in avchd, just read manual. Will def do some with my nikon fast lenses...
  • Akira Wing 7 months ago
Thanks Philip, I appreciate you taking the time. As the 60p feature alone on this camera is absolutely amazing to me. A pass through twixtor will yield some god-like slow motion :)

    Good stuff!

Was this shot with the kit lens?

Also... You should consider using ND filters outside... so far all the outdoor GH1 clips I've seen have shallow depth of field (yay!) but use a super high shutter speed to compensate the wide open lens... Saving Private Ryan is cool... but I'm really curious to see outdoors stuff shot at 1/48th (or close).
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
of course. I have an ND for the stock lens (which it was all shot on) but this literally was first time I used the camera so it really was just going out and seeing what I could do with it...
  • Ian-T 7 months ago
Not that I have to tell YOU this but I use two hoya circular polarizers instead of ND filters to cut out the light coming in. Gives me more control.

Good stuff as usual by the way.

SOLD too ! stock lens behaves ok so i just get the thrills about slapping some FD primes on this puppy... i'll get a red one too :D

  • Stefan Bommelin 7 months ago
Great to see you getting a chance to try this baby out. But as far as I've seen here & around the web the GH1 does indeed have rolling shutter issues, have you noticed any setting to bypass this problem? It almost seems the issues are vorse on the verticle side then it's Canon and Nikon counterparts, as if they turned the sensor 90 degress to get rid of some of the horizontal panning problems. I've seen the 'jelly' effect even in some 720p shots so lowering the resolution doesnt seem to matter, or am I wrong?
  •
  • Glenn (avene.org) 7 months ago
I just downloaded the original 1080p mp4 earlier. Really impressed with what you've managed to put together here with the standard lens. Were you using the viewfinder or lcd for most of these shots?

Also, what would your pick be for a wide angle Nikon lens to go with this camera? I know Tamron have an f2.8 14mm, and Nikon have their own more expensive version. Although I guess the beauty of the camera is that with the adapters you can use almost any lens.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
fastest prime i have is a 20mm sigma, which is 40mm on this camera, so not great...i do have a 14mm at home though

Vimeo is saying the source video "cannot be downloaded any more today". Anybody got another link to the 1080p video?
  • Ian C plus 7 months ago
    Hey Philip,

That link gives me an error "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable." Maybe the popularity of your video has temporarily hosed the site :). I'll keep checking back, eager to see that nice 1080p.

Great work on this stuff, mate.

    Cheers
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
should be working now. Vimeo only allows 100 downloads of source file per day.
  • Ian C plus 7 months ago
    Gotcha.

I had given up on the YouTube link for today, and was trying the exposureroom link you posted, but to no avail. The exposure room one was giving me that unavailable error.

But I kept checking back and the "exposureroom" link came back on-line after a bit. Posted a couple comments down below.

    Thanks again, Philip.

    Hey Phillip,
thanks for that short. When seeing the first videos of the GH1 I was afraid that this cam would turn out to be a flop. But beeing used by a professionell it seems as if it's a great little cam!

So now the crucial question: sell Letus mini and HV20 or keep it? >:D
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
keep it and buy this too ;-)
  •
  • Matt Moses 7 months ago
Philip, I LOVE your "tests"! That is my kind of testing. rolling shutter: who the F cares? You need to shoot attached to a car or motorcyle? Just get a smooth rig.. or use an HV20 or something... which you can get a perfectly fine image from...just work around it... for God's sakes... you are shooting really nice stuff on a rubberband and peanuts budget! This cam is worth the money... hands down... should pay for itself in a month.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
you are my kind of man. I hate charts and crap. I just want to see how well it performs when shooting!

  • Matt Moses 7 months ago
Seems that it would be easy to shoot in Japan and be at the top of ones game.... judging the "tests" put out over there.

Nice test Philip - unfortunately the 17Mbps codec just isn't going to cut it for me personally. I burned a few blu-rays to watch to 1080 footage on the big screen and the same compression artifacts I get on my Vixia HF10 are present.

Really wish they would have gone with 24Mbps - that little boost really helps. Maybe a future model but for now back to the Canon 5D MkII - with all it's problems it still produces stunning images far beyond anything I'm seeing with any sub $10,000 camera.
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
agreed. But at this price point. It's a great camera

Is there a Way to provide one or two little Files, like one inside, one Outside File? Original file from the Cam?

I'd like to test how good the Footage handles colorgrading and how extreme one can get with the footage.

  •
  • Ian C plus 7 months ago
    Philip,

Looks like the download is back up and going. I just downloaded it a few minutes ago. Really like the shots and the flow. Gives a good idea of the look you can get.

I love the look of this except the pixelation (wrong term?). I suppose 17mbps isn't quite enough for now? Philip, @34-36 seconds, on the far left hand side the brownish color seems to break up quite badly. Have you happened to notice which types of colors/lighting/etc breaks up the worst? I realize red typically has some issues, but that brown stuck out more to me than anything else I saw. (Btw, looks like Matt from Oz in that shot. Really enjoy his stuff too, nice guy).

Really enjoyed this Philip, appreciate you taking the time to get this up for everyone.

    Cheers :)!
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
dont judge the h264 file. am uploading an uncompressed one...more details on blog soon.
  • Ian C plus 7 months ago
Awesome. Thanks, Philip. Definitely looking forward to it.

I've got a bit of webspace if you want to host the file on it (1.5 gb right?) I'm not sure how many downloads will be able to get cranked out of my monthly bandwidth, but if you wanna throw it on there, you're welcome to. Send me a message if you're interested.

Otherwise, be looking forward to the footage soon.

    Cheers :)
  •
  • Christopher Johnson 7 months ago
There is aliasing everywhere in the original h.264 file but I can still imagine lots of application for this camera. But I wouldn't ever make a film print from it.

It would be a great small cam in an arsenal.
  •
  • Lance Bachelder 7 months ago
Agree Christopher... great camera and price and lens choices (Leica) but just not a robust enough codec for everyday pro use - too bad.
  • Ian C plus 7 months ago
If you check Philip's comment above, the h.264 encode apparently is not showing the full potential. More to come on uncompressed footage.
  •
  • Lance Bachelder 7 months ago
Remember the footage is never uncompressed - that's the issue - the paltry 17Mbps just isn't enough - I know, my Vixia HF10 uses the same codec - great for fun and special uses but breaks down quickly in post no matter what codec you transcode it to.
  •
  • Christopher Johnson 7 months ago
    Hi Lance! What's up?

    Hi Ian,
I dont think the kind of aliasing I am seeing comes from compression at all. It comes from scaling somewhere in the camera and its being reported over at DVX user forums as well. Its not huge and you wouldn't even see it from 5ft away, but its on every high contrast hard edge that is in focus. The worst is on the white super 8 camera at 1:29 into the clip.
  •
  • Christopher Johnson 7 months ago
There is long thread on the aliasing here

Thanks for the footage/review. question: whats the maximum length of a clip you can record at the highest resolution? I know the new bargain Nikon is 4 minutes, and the new Canon Rebel is 12min but I'm assuming/hoping that with the more powerful dedicated processor Panasonic allows you more time.
  •
  • Jim 7 months ago
Not to be a buzz kill but I thought the images from the camera look embarrassing. The video was cool, but that camera has the same problem all CMOS still cameras seem to have and that is making white peoples skin look like a baboons ass. It's a unbalanced still camera that overheads at 20 minutes of shooting and requires me to wear a back brace. Come on lets get real, I see no return on ivestment on this new concept and no real practicallity for video. I read some of the specs on the camera and they seem fishy to me, 12 megs CMOS sensor maybe but not for video shooting. At $1500 that would chip out perfom almost all of Panny professional HD video cameras I got to belive that is like Sony's 250 HD camera claiming 12 megs but actually providing 6 and doubling in process, plus I think the Canon HF S10 looks better. Call me a hater

Phillip’s top viewed video is the review he gave to the EX3 over 1 year ago and this video has only been up for a week and it’s already approaching those views. Its even close to the top viewed 5D Mark II video on Vimeo.

We all know it isn’t perfect especially when you compare the compression quality to the JVC HM100 but the popularity of this camera is really remarkable.

Phil, the footage is amazing. I'm planning to get this camera when it arrives here in the US later this month. While all the HD footage I've seen online looks amazing, how does it hold up full screen? I'm looking to use it more for viewing on televisions, so I'm wondering if the quality holds up. Thanks!
