I shot this video in the morning right before sunrise so it has some nice ambient lighting. This is my 2007 Christmas Display with 45,000 lights and 176 channels of computer control. Visit holdman.com/christmas for more info. The Song is "Amazing Grace" by Yule.

I love this display. I have shared it with others and have watched it for several months now. The sync. is so precise and is never boring. It is by far one of the best displays I've ever seen, bar none. Great Job. I hope you leave it on this site so we can view it for years to come. : )

Absolutely wonderful! It looks like the house is jumping up and down in time to the music!

I was laid off on Monday, Dec 22 - 3 days before Christmas. This has been very inspirational and uplifting for me. I've watched it several times when I find myself getting down due to my situation. Christmas should be a time of joy but I'm having trouble feeling very joyful right now.

Thanks Richard for such an inspirational display!

Where is the music credited? Whose remix did you borrow?
  • Richard Holdman 2 years ago
It is "Amazing Grace" by Yule. I have the music used for my videos on my web site and I went ahead and credited them in the description.

    Thanks for watching!

It's pretty, and a beautiful display, but how much did this cost? How many people could have been helped with this money?
  • Whitney Lackey 2 years ago
Brad Johnson, he is helping people with his God given talent. And yes it is a talent, just like singing, writing a book, or playing an instrument. You wouldn't tell a musician or a band to quit touring because they were spending too much money on the road would you? So why are you judging this guy? He just brightened up my day and plenty of others - isn't that "helping people"?! if you have money to give that's great .. and how do YOU know he isn't giving some of the money he makes off this to people who are in need? Let GOD be the judge, not you.

Hi Brad. Thanks for the comment.

Please visit my web site at holdman.com for the details. To date we have rasied over $16,000 for the Make-A-Wish foundation by using the display.

I do get comments like yours from time to time though. Tell me what is better though. Spending money on only yourself like vacations, ATVs, Boats, etc. Or something that gives to tens of thousands locally and hundreds of thousands globally.

Take care and have a Merry Christmas.

LOL did you play this tune out loud at that hour ?

...And what about all the energy you spent? Don't you feel guilty for such a waste?

I don't see any comment mentioning it, which actually surprises me.

Our world won't handle all this consumption for many more Christmas, harry up and keep having a good time, while those concerned about the planet do productive things for it.

BTW: Amazing performance, the images really match the beat of the music!

    Hi Rubén

I got into an e-mail argument once with a guy that really said some nasty things about me because I was "wasting" electricity. The following is not directed towards you (I sent it to the other guy) but it may give you a better understanding that Christmas Lights are not going to destroy the world.

Thanks and glad you liked the video.

    -Richard

    =====

Guess how much Electricity was used in the making of this video? When running the display it uses about $5 of Electricity per night when it is running for 4 hours per night in December making it $1.25 per hour to run the display. Now this songs gets played every 6 minutes per hour so that cost me about 20 cents in Electricity to play this song for the cars watching it outside. Normally about 15 cars are watching it at a time with an average of 3 people per car making it cost .004 cents per person that watches it. The Electricity that was used in the making of this video cost about .33 cents.

We have a video that has been viewed over 4 million times and now you are complaining that I used 33 cents worth of Electricity in the making of this video which equals about .000008 cents per person that watches it? Do you also not go to any concerts that may use Electricity because it "is a waste". Do you stop by car dealer lots at night who use about 10x the amount of electricity I do 365 days a year and tell them they are the problem and creating "Global Warming"? Do you also complain to Movie making companies because they use tremendous amounts of energy per second of the movie you are watching? (Hundreds of people and thousands of hours of lighting equipment that is on). Do you only take Cold Showers which only benefits yourself, so you can save 10 cents of energy? I could go on and on but you get the picture.

So my question to you is when you use 33 cents of electricity, do you only use it for yourself making coffee, watching TV, surfing the internet, charging your ipod, etc. or are you using it in a giving way to put a smile on peoples faces and making them realize that the world is not so bad after all.

What you sent to the other guy is very interesting, and it is also true that many other things may use energy unnecesarily, but the point I'd like to make is that it isn't about what cost the energy has, but the amount we are spending instead.

We can still travel with car, use our fridges or whatever that needs energy, but this doesn't mean it will be forever. What I'm concerned about is the future lack of it, which will make us reconsider the value of natural resources and our sources of electricity.

I use a two-screen computer for editing, I have a big camcorder that uses quite a lot of battery, and many other things that noone would consider "excessive", but I still try to be aware of our present situation (specially when speaking about oil).

The point is to have information, to be informed, and I see you've made your maths. If you already had this in mind, no problemo. However, I wonder whether other commentors are concerned or not.

As I sead, great lights. What adds to my amusement is that here, in Spain, there's never nothing similar.

    Thanks for the reply.

Also if you check out the FAQ on my web site at holdman.com/christmas/faq.asp you will see that the display is powered by wind.

I believe that we need to be wise with our energy consumption.
