I was out taking a look around for some spots for filming tomorrow with the Letus Ultimate and EX3 when we saw that the sunset was going to be beautiful…so we pulled over. All I had on me was the little red GH1 and an SLR Gorillapod. So not ideal. But I set it up on the sand, got myself covered in sand and filmed this beautiful sunset. All in 1280×720 mode…50p slowed down to 25p in cinema tools. Tutorial on how to do that here: philipbloom.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-turn-50p-and-60p-into-slow-motion-with-cinema-tools/

Graded with Magic Bullet Looks and it held up just fine!

More details on my site including more info on the beautiful song and where you can buy it. It's from an old Twilight Zone episode!

It looks amazing! Did you use Nikon-primes?

    stock lens!
  • Nate Lindaman plus 2 months ago
That's so cool. I love when someone shoots a gorgeous video with a cheap, stock lens. It takes an ounce of snobbery out of the world.

What a cool bonus feature of the camera. But this video made my D90 so sad.

"But this video made my D90 sad"
Its not because of the GH1, its because of Philip Bloom :)
  • jsendicott 2 years ago
Bloom is the man, no doubt. But my D90 is sad because it doesn't do 60p, and it has a terrible compression scheme. I'm still holding out for a Nikon firmware update that will give us a better picture.

dont hold your breath! the camera has been out long enough for them to do it...i am hoping for a full frame Nikon d800 with FULL manual controls

Stunning, Phil. Amazing how well that footage holds up. Beautiful shots, as always. How much grading did you do in Looks? Was it a preset, or your own mix?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    it was colour reversal tweaked

Well, I am no expert, BUT this camera is looking more and more impressive. Great shots in darkened situations. Just judging visually, its seems to be holding its own.
Looking forward to a review blog on your using it.

Can't wait to put my hand on this camera :) As much fun as I had with my D90, I'm sure the GH1 will make me a lot much happier.

the images are simply beautiful the camera shows potential... is AVCHD editable or will the macbook crash editing it?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
it converts to pro res so is fine!
  • Tito Sacchi 2 years ago
Hey Phil, how does it convert it to pro res. I am not clear on this. Thanks.
  • Mark Espina 2 years ago
In Final Cut you use Log and Transfer, available on the later version of the software. It will transcode it for you in either Apple ProRes(HQ) or Apple Intermediate Codec.

You could also choose to use Premiere (mac or pc) and there would be no need to transcode it as Premiere edits AVCHD natively.

So does VEGAS for PC users.

    Hope this helped.

Everything looks better in slow motion. This is the truth.
    bubblare.se/movie/dave_chappelle_slow_motion

Nice framing. Magic bullet ownz. I'm curious, looks like in some of the sunset shots, the sky looks heavily compressed. Is this in the orignal source or is it cause it has been converted for web.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
have you downloaded the mp4 version? the master is ok...it is compressed of course.
  • mike janov 2 years ago
oh, well ... doesn't that look better...

    OK. I want.

Carry on like this and I expect the manufacturers will GIVE you a GH1 !

Within its limitations this camera looks like an increasingly sensible tool for the semi-pro or astute amateur.

Am I correct in thinking that the LCD swings out and REVERSES as on Video Cams?

    I'll go to your review.

Will this replace your EX3+Letus rig? and why?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
no chance! it's a great little addition but it in no way compares to my full letus rig. 35mbps, proper overcranking, interval recording, built in ND, proper audio connections and monitoring...the list goes on...this is a great little B camera, not a replacement for a full camera rig. Especially an ex3 with 35mm adaptor.

  • Hi, very nice video. I'm very curious about the shutter speed that you used. What are some of the options on the GH1? Can you set it to 1/48th? 1/96th?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    no afraid not 1/30th etc...
  • Thanks for your reply. I figured that 1/48th would be too good to be true. Sorry to batter you with questions but, I'm curious as to what you used for this video. You mentioned that you shot in 50p (to slowdown to 50%), so did you set the shutter to 1/100th to attain the "180 degree" ratio? I ask because I noticed a lot of videos posted here made with dslrs that either are very stuttery or very smeary, but yours seems to be quite natural.

I joined vimeo just so I could <3 this.

The stills look very sharp. Is it a crazy idea to shoot video instead of continuous shooting in order to take action stills?

I know the quality wouldn't be as good, but if it would suffice you'd perhaps have more chance of getting the right shot.
