The Gutenberg press came out in the 15th century with heavy metal fonts, followed by Modern Typography in the 18th century with the solid/geometric forms of Helvetica and Akzidenz Grotesk. More recently in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s avant-garde and freeform fonts were experimented with by pioneering designers such as Emigre, Fuse Font, Jonathan Barnbrook and Stefan Sagmeister.

The digital typography brief “The Limit of the Alphabet” set by Fuse this year asked the designer to rethink how an alphabet might be more expansive and infinitely mutable. Lost Sperm is my attempt at doing this – an emancipation of form in order to find new perspectives of typography in the present time.
