A dedicated but disillusioned high school teacher struggles to find his place in the world in the face of mental health issues, a demanding partner and the needs of his students who rely on him for so much more than just grammar lessons.
After a visit to Africa, Terry finds his middle-class life as a high school teacher empty and decadent. Drowning in materialism, apathy and routine, he starts to lose his passion for teaching when Rene, his favourite student, decides she can’t go through with their plan to raise money to build a school in Kenya. In his devastation, Tumaini, the apparition of a Kenyan girl, appears, spurring him on in his search for a more meaningful life. When Terry’s plan to quit his job and work for a development agency overseas proves to be harder than he thought, he can only confide in his colleague, Candace, which leads them dangerously close to an affair. Desperate for change, Terry decides to quit teaching to pursue his dream job, only to be stopped in his tracks by Rene, who feels abandoned and alone without him – the only caring, positive force in her life. Finally Terry understands what Tumaini has been trying to tell him: that he can make the world a better place from where he is, as long as he doesn’t lose his sense of hope.
Myself and a group of peers shot this film in 2009 as a thesis project for film school. If you want more info, check out the website at tumainimovie.com
