Murmur Study is an installation that examines the rise of micro-messaging technologies such as Twitter and Facebook’s status update. One might describe these messages as a kind of digital small talk. But unlike water-cooler conversations, these fleeting thoughts are accumulated, archived and digitally-indexed by corporations. While the future of these archives remains to be seen, the sheer volume of publicly accessible personal — often emotional — expression should give us pause.

This installation consists of 30 thermal printers that continuously monitor Twitter for new messages containing variations on common emotional utterances. Messages containing hundreds of variations on words such as argh, meh, grrrr, oooo, ewww, and hmph, are printed as an endless waterfall of text accumulating in tangled piles below.

The printed thermal receipt paper is then reused in future projects and exhibitions or recycled.

Murmur study is a collaboration with Márton András Juhász nilseuropa.com and the Kitchen Budapest kibu.hu.

The Murmur Study printers are controlled by Arduinos arduino.cc that receive data from Processing processing.org software.

  • Very nice work, glad to see I'm not the only person who finds all the fleeting messages oddly moving.

I hope that all this paper will be recycled.
  • Christopher Baker plus 2 years ago
Don't worry. The piles of paper are reused for each new installation (it makes a more impressive pile). Any unused paper is recycled.

Pause indeed! This installation serves to highlight the dual nature of humanity, most of us want a certain level of “privacy” and condemn unsolicited prying into our lives and at the same time we yearn for our voices to be heard and to be truly seen by others.

Then again I may be over thinking this since a lot of these messages are people talking about their favorite toe-socks or what type of cereal goes best with a Tuesday… It’s a really great idea.

This is such a clever idea... putting the "virtual world" into matter. How amazing should be to see all these conversations being printed in real time. I wonder if we could actually see all the information that is been sent by cell phones, tv, internet, etc. Congratulations.. This is an outstanding idea!

I agree with Stephane. What a waste of paper ! Oo

At least, glad to know that the paper will be recycled... But your piece just evokes to me an ode to useless pollution...

Anyway, I wish you the best for your next creations. ;)

Glad you found the connection Chad. Let me know what you think of the show if you get a chance.

The work was moving to me. Like the mechanics of a heartbeat, time is elusive unless attached to a rhythm or component or compartment of one sort or another that can be recognized by a more surface, physical sense. Perhaps that's why time lapse is so compelling to us and other such exercises that connect us to these facts. Well done. Cheers.

Well that was the most poetic response I've gotten in a while! Thanks for the good words. Perhaps we'll run into each other in Minneapolis next time I'm back in town. Till then ...
  • BFIS 2 years ago
You're welcome. If you're in town, please know I work for MCAD - stop on by and look me up - would enjoy meeting you and talking more about stuff - appreciate the quick replies. Cheers.

The simple ideas are always the best ;-). There's a gallery in Bristol, UK called The Arnolfini and they'd love this. It would also look great in just about any part of their gallery.
  • Christopher Baker plus 2 years ago
Thanks Gaina, I'll have to take a look at it.
