Veracruz is the port city on Mexico's Caribbean coast, where beginning in the early 1500's, 10's of 1,000's of Africans along with their culture were brought into the country.
One of those early arriving Africans was Gaspar Yanga who led a successful slave revolt against the Spanish and established free territory known... as San Lorenzo de los Negro, Now renamed in the name of it's legendary founder, El Yanga.
This photograph of a woman soldier in Emilio Zapata's Revolutionary Army of the South (circa 1910) and the portriat of Vincente Guerrero, second President of the Republic of Mexico, are in the City Museum of Veracruz.
