At the edge of the Gulf Stream passing by North Carolina, several colleagues I and spent 2 days searching below the surface for what can only be described as an epidemic of plastic pollution. The Sargassum Sea is our North Atlantic Gyre which is the open ocean nursery for hundreds of species of fish, crustaceans, sea turtles and the feeding grounds for multiple trophic levels. At the bottom of what was once a rich food chain is a petroleum based man made product that has crept out into one of the richest ecosystems in the world and photodegraded into billions of pieces large and small...the consequences of our lazy and wasteful consumer culture are beginning to show themselves for those of us who care enough to look...just beneath the surface.
