    Gorgeous!

Still learning..... you can remove unwanted camera movement in Final Cut Pro? That would come in handy!
I am limited to using FCE right now, but hope to graduate up to FCP in the near future.

  • What lenses were you using up in the helicopter? Did you pick one and go with it or were you switching out constantly?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
'copter shots were stock lens of EX1

I shot and cut this about 9 months ago...it's been offline due to not being able to have it public until again until now...I have since used the Beethoven track on my York House short. It's a favourite piece of mine so when I saw The Fall last month you can tell how much I fell in love with the opening sequence!

What the hell dude!? You have been sitting on this for a year? What other wonderful footage are you keeping to yourself?

the aerial shots are really breathtaking, while the ground ones are average. How did you stabilise your footage in the helicopter? A steadicam?

Nature buff eh? I' like to share this with you, perhaps get some critique. It is the HVX with no plug-ins used in FCP.

Curious about your strategy when shooting out of the helicopter. Did you shoot with the EX1 lens wide open to give maximum room for adjustment in post to remove shake (knowing this would effectively increase your focal length by cutting down the image.) Or did you just frame the shots so they looked like you wanted?

It occurs to me that helicopters are expensive to rent for shooting, but not that expensive.

It's totally awesome. But it's 30p, right? Would have been even awesome-er in 24p... ;)

Philip, I have watched all your videos online, really impressive all of them, but the aerial footage really blew my mind, I thought you needed to have a steadycam to get acceptable footage from a helicopter. Have you seen Hitchock tracking shot of the car in the French Riviera in "To Catch a Thief?". Very shaky in comparison to your beautifully smooth footage. We use an EX3 with Letus Ultimate, would you recommend we take the Letus off for this type of shot? Or rather keep it on and put a really wide Nikon prime on the Letus? Do we need to take the helicopter door off, then harness yourself and place a beanbag on your knees with the camera on it?
Thanks a lot for your advice, you really inspire us!
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
thanks, just used a naked ex1 with wide angle on on it and a cine saddle resting on against the edge of the window that was open. Door wasn't off.

can u tell me how much quality u think u lost from post to putting it on vimeo, that was shot 1080P right?
Did you cut the image to get another aspect ratio in finul cut?
did u use a DOF ADAPTOR?
congrats, u have really nice neat shots there, keep on picturing our beautiful world friend...

Love this vid! I've been to Jasper, Alberta and as a "flatlander" was blown away by the 360 degree view of nothing but mountains from the top of Whistler's peak. I got great still shots from there. Thanks so much for this beautiful reminder of a happy memory.
