The principle of subsidiarity must always be implemented in any political system.
I as citizen would mostly be interested in the local/community level and I would rather leave complex decisions on the national/global level to experts to whom I´d delegate my vote. These experts/fulltime politicions should always be obligated to explain their decisions and they would be controlled by us. The lowest hirarchie level would always have a veto right against every above level. Also there should be more possibilities for direct democracy and proposals from the ordinary people.

I really hope we will soon get a democratic, transparent, participative, global political system that suits the society we are. (We are a different society on every level: Local, national, global. And we interact and influence each other.)

Unfortunately, here in California, this wonderful theory of the transformative power of "letting the people participate directly in government" is running headlong into reality. The Proposition system allows the electorate to alter the State Constitution.

It has resulted in a fiscal and governmental disaster on an unprecedented scale.

Bread and circuses. Lots of services, and no new taxes to pay for any of them. We're reduced to borrowing against the future earnings of the state lottery, for crissakes.

I'd love to believe that there will exist a way for the connectivity of the web to result in better, more responsive government - but we're not there yet. Not by a long shot.

Hey Dave :) I'm not so sure the this documentary is talking about the same thing that played out in CA. The budget disaster we got going on here... I just don't think many people would blame it on a kind of transparency or ultra-involvement that backfired.
  • I agree with Mike here, this is a means to finding an answer, not the answer. The end of this documentary told how it's not a utopia idea but it's a very very good idea that is really unknown or misunderstood by most people. As someone who lives in LA, nothing described in this doc has ever happened here.

That was great! One angle that we hope to make progress on with Carrotmob.org is to expand democracy by making Carrotmob into a platform that will let people vote with their spending in a more organized and coordinated way.... I think that one of the things that's happening here is that some types of ordinary activity that have always happened with no real impact are now finding ways to have impact just through the power of coordination and self-organization. Anyway, great job.

"Great overview of what is happening. Puts the current German cencorship debate, whitehouse.gov, Iranian unrest etc. into a different perspective. Many leaders are getting really really scared… lets hope it all goes as smoothly as possible :-) ."

Great to see this discussion going on - the internet has changed everything.

And it's been interesting the last 5 years watching the slow wave of more and more people / companies / etc understanding it's real power.

A great film with some very interesting points and observations. We can only hope...

However, no power was ever handed over willingly. It has been the result of great, often violent, struggle. Wars and revolutions. To the victorious go the spoils. I don't think ANY government is going to just hand over control to the populace. Government is there to control us, not to manage us. I don't see that changing unless there is MASSIVE public pressure and awareness, akin to the civil rights movement in the 60's. Its great to see pro-active involvement at the local and community level, but I am not optimistic about the internet changing the way government behaves. We are still the fringe, the minority. But it is great to see discussion and the slow wave building, as Mike says.

This is not just about the internet, the change in human behavior is happening, due to a leap in cognitive awareness that has a life of its own. No one can control it. The film captures the spirit of human consciousness becoming more aware of global consciousness. It is a reflection of something much greater than the images and messages.

Fantastic documentary ! Thank you. I am wondering why the Parecon (Participatory Economy being developed by Michael Albert and Noam Chomsky) was not mentioned as it seems relevent? Too American perhaps? Anyway just curious.

Let's get clear on the definition of Government:
"A group of people sanctioned to initiate the use of force against everyone else within a geographical area."

This is fundamentally immoral and destructive. Please be careful, we are talking about coercion.

    Definition of Corporation:
A group of people protected by the gun of Government from liability or responsibility for their actions.

It's funny how all of the visions for transforming government mentioned in this documentary are already handled (or could be handled similarly) by the people and web sites featured in this documentary.

I think if you're interested in this sort-of thing you may want to check out Dan 3.0 revision3.com/dan30 Basically the video-blogger Dan Brown (not the guy that wrote The Da Vinci Code) is putting his life into his viewers hands for a year. People suggest "tasks" for Dan to do ranging from Small tasks like writing a letter to the President to Medium sized tasks like going to visit his girlfriend who lives in Pennsylvania (he lives in Lincoln, Nebraska) to Large tasks like breaking a World Record.
