Broadly my practise explores notions of freedom and containment. My current series “The Articles” investigates the meaning of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its 30 Articles. Buildings and their narratives form the basis for exploring human rights issues. Shabandar Café, Baghdad 5-03-2007 (the print shown in the film) shows the much-loved café in Al Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad’s cultural heart that brims with bookstores. Founded in 1917 the cafe was decimated when Al Mutanabbi Street was bombed in 2007 and reopened in 2009 by its owner Mohammad al-Khashali despite loosing his 5 sons in the tragic event.
