"Study No. 16" (1983, 4:40, NTSC analog video de-interlaced for Vimeo) is one of a series of absolute videographic compositions that were created via the multitracking of improvised real time performance with a standard broadcast video switcher. The intention was to explore the affect made possible through the architectonic structuring of the basic elements of color, shape, texture, and rhythm.
Ed Dorsey composed and performed the music for the piece through a process of direct improvisation while viewing real-time video playback. The complex woven musical structures were recorded as a single take solo performance with no editing or overdubbing (in an interesting contradistinction to the muliti-track process used in the performance of the video imagery).
