Mr. Jay Lang wrote on the review for the Hip Hop:
Hip Hop has never sounded like this. With Andrew Greeley whipping the beast on drums (yes LIVE HIP HOP DRUMS), the great and faithful Lew Scott on Bass and Joel Newton on Guitar, Big J is being challanged as few Hip Hop artists are, naked in the streets of Newburgh, NY. Rapping to jazz is one thing, rapping to Zappa smacks BeefHeart who smokes with Joe Pass and gambles with The Master Bugalu's directions...leaves us only wanting more...and bigger and better, bring it on...we is a waitin'!
On May 5th.2009 I was graced with wonderful master musicians Joel Newton guitar, Lew Scott bass and Chris Pasin trumpet also Charles farmer soprano sax who plays the music wonderfully, Joel Newton guitar he always comes to my gig with new fresh music he is a master of the cords progression,
Yes this was a all star group I’m turning a corner and Introducing hip hop: to the Terrace Lounge and to my main man big J. A.K.A “Mr. Ace”
Mr. Jay Lang also wrote It was Miles with Gerry Muligan and some other great cats that created Birth of the Cool, changing the face of jazz forever, then again with Kind of Blue, Miles forced his band mates to 'pull it out and bleed all over the floor' for us; then Bitches Brew, Miles hit the clubs and hung with best of the day, only to recreate another musical form.
The Bearer of that burning smoldering torch is among us NOW in the persona of Bugalu Smith! Make him proud as you play those precious Tuesdays...as if it's the last time you'll EVER play! And BE COOL, for without The Cool...what is it? And if you wonder what cool is, just watch the Master..
Jay Lang also wrote: Bugalu meets the Cats on the Corner:
As a locomotive leaving Grand central, these 3 sessions begin with the Master Engineer Bugula announcing for departure. With his coal burning Jazz Cats, he begins #1 as usual, grabbing your attention with a drum intro that only Bugalu can do, killer! Then as the train picks up speed, things get Marvinlous! By Corner 3, the Cats are doing what we've been hoping for ala Joel Newton on Guitar. YES! NOW we are seeing what we can only conceive of what the Master is dreaming, or hallucinating: This is sonic, psychedelia-fused breaking barriers Jazz Blazz! The Master is painting his canvas, his brushes and colors are fresh and wet, This is getting this reviewer where he wants to go, sonic jazz heaven where the greats are DEMANDING a transformation! Now this is getting HOT! People get ready, there IS a train A Comin'! All Aboard! The transformation has begun!
